Classic & Vintage - Another Schwinn to id year

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just picked up a World Sport with GM604780 under the bottom bracket, nothing on the badge and nothing on the chain stay. Looks like late 80s early/mid 90s..haven't found any reference to this long a serial number on the posts..
Thanks

What's the component brand and model? It usually tells a lot. I have an early nineties Heavy Duti with a BB s/n. That may help some. Also check the hubs and the back of the brakes. Lower end models of the mid eighties had Chang Star brakes, better ones had dia compe. Maybe it overlapped on the brakes, not sure.
Generally we need more info. The world sport started kind of low in position, and gradually got better in quality.,,,,BD
My 85 World sport has a BB s/n of GO285.

See if there is a date code on the right rear fork end (near the rear wheel sprocket). If there is a four digit code is preceeded by a "G", it is a Taiwanese bike. The first two digits following the G are the month, and the next two are the year. G0280 would have been built in February, 1980.

I have an 84 World Sport and it seems to be better quality than this one. On this one, the components are; Shimanno SIS deraillerus & shifters F&R, Pro Star brakes & levers, Champion handlebars, Sakae SX crank set.
Found a sticker on the chainstay that says Schw App Giant 3506. Newer looking decals than my 84. The large SCHWINN decal on the seat tube is made up of lots of thin black lines also says World Sport on seat stays and top tube with lots of thin horizontal black lines after the words. Bike is a very bright red. SCHWINN is in black while World Sport is in white.
Camera is on the blink...
Thanks,
Keith

What graphics was Schwinn using in 1980? This one has the yellow and white decals with the name in small letters like an 85 Sprint I used to own. It also had foam grips, and has a round badge with an 0595 date code? It does have a Taiwan sticker under the 4130 one.,,,,BD

The striped lettering sounds like late eighties. The WS seemed to yoyo some.

My 84 looks exactly like yours same color and everything, this other one looks more modern graphics wise....

My guess is that it's an '86 or '87 Giant-built model. The first three characters in the serial, GM6, might indicate: Giant, December 1986. If this is the case, it's probably an '87 year model if the frame was built that late in the year. Just a guess, though; Scooper, Bob Hufford, or Sierra would know more.........Understatement of the year: Schwinn serial numbers from the '80's are sometimes a bit mysterious. :D

KLW2, Just to put an exclamation point on your thread, I had a 86 World Sport. The color and graphics are identical to yours. BUT! The drive train was a friction shift, Suntour setup, not Shimano SIS like yours. I really liked that bike but the frame size was too big for me. Sadly, I sold it in December. If I lived near you, I'd make you a very nice offer. I really like that color and found the Schwinn World Sport had a very nice ride. If you do a search for threads that I started, you can read some very nice comments by Scooper describing the World Sport's position in the Schwinn line-up (lower-middle end) and his thoughts about the quality of the World Sport (good).
Sorry, I could not resist posting a picture of what is now someone else's 86 Schwinn World Sport.
