The shadow knows...
Exactly. There is a "stick" coming out the front of the nearest vertical post. You can see a shadow of this "stick". The shadow juts out from the structure but doesn't connect to anything. It has been cut at an angle on the end to help the illusion. There is a different nub sticking out the front of the furthest vertical.
The photograph was taken at a very precise angle to give the illusion. If you saw it from another angle it would be a perfectly rational structure.
FYI this is probably what it would look like from directly above and directly from the side.

That's what I figured. The photo has to be taken from the correct horizontal angle and also from the right height, so the higher front stub (the long one) lines up with the lower rear stub (the short one). Do that, move over go the right until the edge of the front horizontal stub lines up with the rear vertical, and you've got nothing left but a depth of field photog issue.
