I almost made the same move before I was run over by a truck last year. Talk about your extreme body modifications!

Well I just learned from a friend who learned from the boyfriend of one of my housemates that my house might be splitting up so I may be looking for roommates. God, communication is awesome here.

Anyways coolio on moving down here, I am looking forward to getting back down (been spending the last few weeks at my mom's house on Vashon Island).

Captured by Porches... learn it live it love it. Some parties you can spot like 100 fixies parked outside...

Stumptown Coffee, there's a mandatory spot for caffeine fanatics and fixie riders alike...

Also really good for coffee is half n half, it's a lot smaller and different atmosphere than stumptown so it can be a nice break.

half n half now serves courier coffee. no longer stumptown. I work at the half n half on side jobs. courier coffee is this dude who locally roasts in his back yard and delivers by bike...stumptown is good coffee, but their ethics are a lot different than they say.
on a side note, welcome to portland. hope to see you at alpenrose!

oh wow, that's your bro's house? i remember a huge party there... best beer i had in my life and it was homebrewed, sold from the tap... if it's the house i'm thinking of (N. Prescott & 9th corner). good times.

on the half n half note: hmm, haven't had a chance to check it out but i'm always down to try some other locally roasted coffee. i'll have to go there in the next week or so.

was that guy in that williamate weekly issue on baristas / portland coffee? i swear hearing / reading something along that lines before, a guy that roasts coffee on his own property and then delivers via velo...

cassette

yup that's the dude. It's really good coffee.

Seems like nobody really reads the "portland thread" so am posting here,

Just found out today I'll be moving to Portland. I'll be heading up from Salt Lake Utah as soon as I have a job and apartment locked in. Have some friends in the Laurelhurst area so am thinking that might be a good place to look. Also Dad lives in Lake Oswego, not so appealing but I'm thinking I might apply with PCC and their RN program and thats pretty close. Looking to work in an area hospital doing nurses aide stuff like I'm doing now while working on that nursing license. Anyways, I hope to meet you all and would like to join up for some group rides and what not. I have been to Portland several times before, never with bike, and I'm gonna need some showing around. :D :D :D

Check out University of Portland, and Linfield. Both are very good nursing schools located in Portland. Linfield is in NW (literally right on 23rd. st.) and UofP is out in NoPo. I've got a couple friends that go to both of them and it sounds like they are quality programs.

There is a chance that I'll be out there soon. Everything I know about that city is culled from internet bicycle forums. It sounds good.

Things are moving along way faster than expected. I just got hired on at OHSU so I'll probably moving up 1st or 2nd week in June. Still looking for apartments around town. Spending a lot of time on Google Earth flying over town, looking at possible bike routes and what not. Found a killer .kmz here (http://www.metro-region.org/article.cfm?ArticleID=15341)that has lots of bike paths laid out and ranked as High, Moderate, Low, bike lane...yadda yadda .. its cool though. I'm getting really excited to gtf out of SLC I must say.

zelah

yeah i can definitely understand that, right now i think its great but in the next few years i'm expecting to be looking around for new cities, Philly in '11??

willypilgrim

it was unoccupied and in construction, and an out of control corporate chain. I see no problem.

I was told they finished construction and opened regardless, and regularly have a police car around the area, which makes sense seeing as police are nothing more than the protectors of private property.

I'm not trying to be some hardcore anarcho punk, but seriously, why give a **** if a corporate entity is destroyed and no one is harmed? No one was immediately out of work, as the place wasn't open, if anything, construction workers got a longer contract because starbucks had to rebuild.

you pdx-people with complaints, what do you not like?

Sinfield
05-17-07, 07:14 AM
you pdx-people with complaints, what do you not like?

The people. The ****ing annoying as hell "bikey" hippy/ hipster ****ing people. If I never see another ****** wearing skinny black jeans and ranting about burning down a ****ing starbucks because it's "too corporate man" I'll be happy.

Oh and the ****ing "Keep Portland Weird" bumper stickers. I ****ing hate that whole movement.

andre nickatina
05-17-07, 08:23 AM
Keep Portland Weird is the ****, if you don't like it go to Music Millenium and tell them. We're a weird town and should stay that way.

I agree with the holier-than-thou track bike hipsters pissing me off, but seriously, just ignore them. It's not that hard. Just because we both ride track bikes doesn't mean we have anything in common.

P.S. If you live here and you go to Starbucks, you don't know coffee and that's the truth. Why is that so harsh for you? We live in a town that houses one of the best coffee roasteries in America, Stumptown, and we're a city that likes to support local business. The suburbanites from Gresham and the yuppies from the Pearl are the ones supporting Starbucks. Yay for weirdo liberal Portland OR.

My only complaint is the cops targeting fixed gears, and the fact that downtown is torn up with construction.

+1 to mr. A-to-the-N.

i also just really had a hard time making friends. could have been me, could have been people's attitudes, could have been a mix.

savier_pdx
05-17-07, 05:30 PM
last race i went to i turned around and left cus my friend and i started getting heckled by some of the messengers. i just rode by and they started saying **** like, "come on skid! you can do it!" just because you don't know me doesn't mean i can't ride my bike.

some people just need to put there attitudes away in this town. it makes me not want to meet new people through riding bikes.

deimos
05-17-07, 05:46 PM

the bad part of portland is its too cool for school attitude

but it is hard to tell who actually has it and who doesnt

sometimes

people just look too cool for school

which isnt cool but can be accepted

deimos
05-17-07, 06:03 PM
aw phooey
i think a lot of that stuff is just in our heads, make believe, besides, the people who front those types of attitude are often the ones with self esteem issues

personally if i even felt the least bit "heckled" at a race/ride, whatever... i would most likely directly approach them and strike up a conversation, see whats up, if they were just kidding around or if they had real beef with me. why would they? i have faith pdx will be a effing kickass place to reside

so im still very excited to move, still skowering CL for an apt. if yal have a scoop on somthin hit me up. and once i get up there i expect a full on tour and some heckling and a puch in the eye.

savier_pdx
05-17-07, 06:25 PM
i guess i could of approached them but i just really didn't want to deal with it. it wasn't a big deal or anything, i wasn't trying to make it seem like it was. i was just using it as an example of people trying to be elitest/cool/whatever.

anyway, welcome to portland

zelah
05-17-07, 06:37 PM
yeah, portland people are a little too cool/pro-(anything you can think of) sometimes, if that makes sense. i've met a lot of people who needed to get over themselves

edit: oh! and where the hell are the girls that don't drink/smoke, ****

goddamn, man...portland people are boozers...if you can deal with 9 months of no sun without it, good for you....but portland is dark, rainy, and full of alcohol(ics).

on the plus side, the brakeless bill has passed the house committee and now awaits a floor vote before it's finally signed into law...

well, good thing for people that would rather watch out for traffic rather than motorcycle cops downtown. bad thing for the dutret's of the world.

baravettski

I moved here about 9 months ago, I think it's tight. Got a fixed gear after my city bike thing got stolen and it's been alright, there's some too cool for schools around but that ain't ****. Someone yelling 'get some gears' or whatever is the same as people yelling 'skater ***' at me 20 years ago, just let it ride. The majority of peeps I have met so far have been pretty mellow. And yeah, that Stumptown **** is bangin.'

Andre, what are the spots to avoid as far as cop traps? I'm brakeless and had a cop slow down and turn right in front of me on Vancouver, I think he was trying to figure out how fast I could stop...whatever he did it for, it was stupes...
