Take a good quality fixed/fixed hub. You've got your track cog+lockring on one side and a freewheel threaded onto the other. All's fine and dandy, but then ... you take the bike offroad (let's say either xc or cx). Is this a recipe for disaster, or have others run this setup without issue? Do any hub manufactures even warranty such an odd setup? I'm trying to plan for maximum versatility, but this may be pushing it too far.

I ride a fixed mountain bike and race cross fixed using ENO hubs. No problems at all.
Any decent hub will work for your needs.

i ran an eno hub with no problems either

i've also heard surly hubs being used off road with success... esp on 'cross frames

Sorry, I side-stepped my own big question. I have no issues w/ riding fixed offroad, but I'm curious about using a bmx freewheel for xc/cx with it only threaded onto a "fixed" amount of threads.

No problems whatsoever. Many people run bmx freewheels threaded onto fixed/track hubs without problems.

I've never heard of a freewheel stripping a hub. It's fine.
