nope...my uncle rode modified 10speeds...I would say that the roots of mtb lie more with adventerous roadies than bmxes or MX riders looking for more variety...at least from what I have heard and read.

Bikes like this:

They're still produced by Cook Brothers (http://www.cookbros.com/) Good solid single speed cruiser bikes.

People have been exploring off-road tracks for decades. In the UK, there is a club dedicated to off-road riding, established in 1955. The riders used touring bikes with low gears and fat tyres.
Members of the club did some epic rides, such as solo crossing of Iceland.
If you go way back, Bianchi were building suspension mountain bikes in the 1920s, they even came with an ice-axe holder.

Off-road racing goes way back, in the form of cyclo-cross.
In the mid 1970s, there were some experiments in the UK into specialised off-road bikes, which pre-dated the Marin Co repack race. Its just that muddy trails in the Welsh mountains lack the marketing appeal of sunny California.

Way back in the 80's we had MTB's even though they are nothing like what you see today. I got my first one in about 1983. It had a flat bar, fat tires, thumb shifters and a steel fork.
Suspension? We did'nt need no stinking suspension!
