Foo - Just how many FOO engineers are there?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It seems everytime I turn around I am hearing another FOOster admit they are an engineer. I'm glad I'm not the only one....I have my geeky engineer company. Already I know of RitehseDad, VegaVixen, Slvoid, JSchen. Who else? Chime in.

Who's an engineer?

Disclaimer: Actual engineers....please don't start the "sanitation engineer" or "combat engineer" jokes...I mean people who actually got their college degrees in some engineering discipline (and hopefully do it for a living now).

Foo Engineer Roll Call - Who's here?

I think a cool piece of software would be for a program to read a jpeg pic or something from a camera (let's say the pic was a picture of a book) and it would be able to read the letters, and will automatically type it in something like word.

I thought he was in Masters program for ChemE. Although...he isn't truly "working as an engineer" as I stated in first post.

Nope....we have an "order of the ring" ceremony too. I hung mine in the frame with my diploma (and now it is proudly displayed in a box in the closet in my spare room somewhere).

Have an MSME. Considering teaching at the local University, while going for a PhD. Though I have the possibility of going back to the type of work I was doing before I had to leave it. Don't yet know which way I'll go....

LOL....this is a true story.

Back when I was in school, and in the dynamics (mechanics with motion) class. I worked the graveyard shift and the only other person who worked at that time was wack-job nut case security guard. I was working one night on some homework from my dynamics class (stuff like a box dropping out of a plane going X mph at a trajectory of blah blah blah).

He comes up behind me (I didn't see him) and was looking over my shoulder at the problems I was working on. He must have been there for a minute before he finally blurts out "What the hell are you doing?".

I replied, "working on my homework - I'm in college remember?".

He says "What the hell are you going to school to be?".

"An Engineer" I said.

He looks very quizzical for at least a full minute or two. The wheels were spinning so hard I practically smell smoke from his head. Then he blurts out, "You gotta learn all that sh1t just to drive a train?"

I am a certified network security engineer however it was a certificate, not a degree. Now I do systems programming and engineering in a security role.

To a pessimist, the glass is half empty.
To an engineer, the glass is too big.

Meh, that's actually just a RC car transmission I picked because it was the first naked tranny pic (no that's not the search term I used) I found on Google. The Dana flyer was about some new all-wheel drive transmission for wheeled bucket loaders. Freaking gorgeous.

By the way, who likes it raw?

Raw is good. You can see where it came from, and opens up all kinds of possibilities for analysis.

You can never have too much data. You just use what you need, and file the rest 'til you do.

My kid wants to be an engineer of some sort - he really hasn't decided what type yet (he just turned 15 today), but is leaning toward construction or mechanical. Regardless, I signed him up for Algebra II & trig next year (he's taking geometry this semester in 9th grade), and chemistry... what else should he take in HS?

Embedded engine controls. Oddball half math/half CS degree. Whatever, it actually kind of fits. Although I will say that learning to fly made a deeper impression about feedback loops and instability than any class ever could.

Writing. You should see some of the verbless flotsam that passes for "requirements." Bah. Beyond that, the whole discipline of writing tight essays plays really well into cohesive, modular designs: "Exactly WHAT is this thing supposed to do? Make it do THAT."

Math and science are what he'll want to focus on. Sounds like he's heading down the right path. The better he gets at math in high school, the better he's likely to do in college.

It also never hurts to have a hobby or job with a technical side to it to keep things interesting and grounded in real life examples. Wood or metal working, remote control cars, or cycling are all good ones. It seems that the same sort of people who like to tinker are the ones that make good engineers.
