I'm probably coming to SF in March. Can you give me some info on bike shops and vegan/vegetarian restaurants, and anything else I can't miss while I'm there?

my restaurant recommends and favorite veg dishes there:

golden era (spicy gourmet "chicken")
osha thai (papaya salad)
king of thai noodle (veg pad kee mao)
pakwan (palaak paneer)
chaat cafe (chole batura)

Cha Ya on Valencia is a mind-blowingly good vegan Japanese place that opened pretty recently. It's pretty close to a couple of decent bike shops: Freewheel Valencia (well-stocked, but some of the sales dues have been kind of dicks) and Box Dog (not as well stocked, but the staff seem really nice - more of a co-op-y vibe, although I don't think it's a co-op).

Everyone is going to tell you that the best LBS is Freehweel Hayes, and they are right. You should probably also go to American Cyclery, just to look around. It's really expensive, but they have pretty much anything you could ever need or want in stock. It's also really close to Amoeba records, which is a good time if you like records.

Not to get all fussy, but worker owned collective != co-op... either way, it seems like a nice shop with good folks working there. They gave me a good price on a stem.

Good thing. This isn't like the skull and bones is it?

Also, I'm looking to get some pink phils laced to mauve unmachined deep Vs? No, not really.

Not sffixed. But we will jump you in with group hugs and put flowers in your hair, then make you spend one night alone at LeVey's Church of Satan.

Still want to be down?

I was there for a week last summer and made a point to try every vegan place i heard about. A few favorites are:

Golden Era (572 O'farrell) it was mentioned a few posts up. Awesome food, cheap prices. Try the vegan lemon chicken.

Ananda Fuara (1298 Market st.) Good vegan brunch and specialty teas.

Millenium (580 Geary) Expensive, but the only vegan fine dining place I've ever eaten at. Every dish there is a unique creation rather than trying to immitate something else.

Those are just a few, but there are a ton of others.

Try riding up Geary St. one day. It's almost impossible!

yeah, i was on foot the whole week. I can't remember seeing any fixies going up or down the big hills... mainly just back and forth on the Market St. bike lanes, but I was staying on Bush st. between Powell and Mason, so i don't think that many kids lived around there.

When I was there for the holidays I stayed in Russian Hill. It was near the intersection of Jones and Union. I borrowed a singlespeed from someone, and I couldn't even make it halfway up most of those hills. Do you guys just avoid them?

when I lived in SF I found there is a bike map that shows hill grade, so it's easy to plan routes to avoid the steep hills if you don't know the city well. http://www.sfbike.org/download/map.pdf

If you somehow find yourself out in the avenues (Sunset District) there's a good Asian vegan place called Shangri-La on Irving and 22nd or so.

That place is pretty good. Good lunch specials, IIRC.

Naan Cury at Irving and 9th Ave is good Pakistani food.. Cheap! Golden Gate Park has a pretty decent stretch of road closed on Saturdays for your cruising enjoyment.

man if you're in the sunset you'd do much better to go to :

nan king bistro on 9th (good americanish chinese)
yellow submarine on irving (bomb ass boston style sub sammiches)
hotai on 9th (japanese noodle house)

and the ride from my place in outer sunset to the mission is SO worth it when i go to pakwan...screw that naan n curry restaurant chain bs
