well at least for west TX it is....hard to believe I rode on Thurs in shorts and a ss jersey!!...we've got ice on the trees and sections of the interstate are closed....looks like it will warm up to about 50 on Thurs, but another cold front is coming in for next weekend....I guess I can go the Y for a swim and then a steam...I guess it could be worse.

You're tellin me it's cold! It was 66 when I left work Friday afternoon. By the time the sun set 3 hours later it was in the 40's and dropping. Right now it's still raining on and off and the trees are starting to ice. I don't plan on going anywhere until I absolutely have to. Unfortunately that'll probably be around 7:00 tomorrow morning for work. I'd rather the weather stay nasty and cold now and be nicer later this spring when the rides start getting organized in March/April. :)

I made it into the office. Drove at about 25-30mph the whole way in though. Wasn't too bad as long as one was careful about sudden inputs of power, brakes and steering. Not much worse than if it was just wet though. Its crazy quiet around the office this morning though. Seems more than a few people have decided to make it a late morning if at all.

It was even cold in my exercise room this morning when I did my 45 minutes of spin.

My boss told my entire team to stay put unless we just had to get out so I am "working" from home:D I drive a company vehicle (a Chevy Astro van) and it handles like crap even when it's dry. I can't even imagine driving it on slick roads.

+a billion Actually it was just yesterday for me.

Just got told that we might be closing early today, and it might not be til noon tomorrow that we open the office again. Since I am one of the closest to the office, jokes were made that it doesn't apply to me. I then asked if it was ok to show up and work in my wetsuit, since I was planning on riding my bike tomorrow.

I drive from Ft worth to Richardson and it really wasn't too bad, I-70 by my house was the worst road of all of them...I think it took longer to scrape all the ice off my windows then it did to drive in.

I'm up in the DC area this week, and they have our weather. I stopped in a bike shop to see what the scene's like here, and they said they've been doing spring-like business due to the unseasonal warm temps.

I just wish I had my bike up here too.

I flew back from Va. on Friday, 70's when I got there a week before, dropped to 30's mid week.
70 Friday afternoon at DFW light rain. went to kroger came out and it was 44 freaking degrees.
stayed home yesterday, I don't mess with ice, especially on the new 121.
25 is my cut off for riding so I'll give it a try later today.

It's still F'en cold! I am going to New Orleans for a wedding this weekend. Some family was there over last weekend and it was in the 70's. Of course this weekend it is expected to be about 10 degrees warmer than the DFW area this weekend.

I think 25 degrees is the coldest I will ride in. I aint riding in a WIND CHILL either!

marty - I drove on the part of 121 from Grapevine to 35 yesterday it wasn't bad at all, and I was really worried about that overpass. It looked like overnight they had it closed, but by 8:30 am it was open.

Thought about riding in the cold yesterday, but a brief foray into the backyard to clean up after the dog changed my mind for me, real dang quick. If you rode Marty, more power to you!!

I'm watching the weather forcast for Saturday. I'm supposed to be riding a 200K out of Willow Park and right now the weather people say a few showers (30% chance) with a high of 44 degrees and NNW wind at 11mph.

I want to do the Brevet and made a committment to myself to ride a century every month this year so I'm hoping the forcast doesn't degrade any more than it already is. I'll take 50 degrees with no rain and skip the wind if I have to choose!

I actually rode for about 30 min yesterday in NRH. Wasn't too bad. I did make the mistake of going through a shaded area though. Paid the price with the bike sliding out from under me. Nothing damaged. Kinda stoved my left wrist for a little while, (once I got home and it warmed up.)

I just arrived at the office (2hrs later than usual). More sleet falling in the Dallas area, but the roads are more or less drivable at VERY SLOW speeds. It's pretty slushy out there anywhere thats moderately traveled, and only the bridges/overpasses freeze back up quickly after getting broken up. I had more trouble with ice IN the parking garage than outside on the roads. Cars dripping water off them from the slush freezes on the inclines. OH SO MUCH FUN.

I stepped out a little while ago here in NRH and there's not a lot but just enough at the wrong temp to discourage making my necessary trip on my slick skinny tired bike. I don't want another fall and it would be nearly a guarantee.

Well it wasn't as bad as I thought once I got off of my street. Everything melted now.

I went riding today, saw one other guy that yelled out "we're diehards aren't we?" 40 degrees and a light rain. I didn't get cold, just my toes. I need to get some rain covers for my shoes.

I'm going CRAZY here in Tyler. I haven't ridden in 4 or 5 days now. It's 30+ right now but with like 90% humidity. It's damp and c-c-c-c-cold. I need a trainer. I'll go ride the trails tomorrow if it's not too wet. Riding in the woods is more bearable than the road.

I don't mind the cold. If it were just cold and dry I would be riding everyday. I don't like the cold, wet weather. If we can ever get rid of the rain, I will be riding.

I have trouble with cold, but even more so with a damp cold. It goes right through you. I picked up a wind vest on ebay last night (ebay so screwed up when they moved the apparel section around, theres tons of jerseys and such under "other") and should be picking it up tonight (local seller) so I'm slowly adding a few more pieces to my winter gear kit.

Three days in a row of riding!!! What a feeling!!! I thought it was going to be raining this morning so I actually slept later than what I normally do. I woke up, saw no rain, got suited up and did the RBM Richardson 35 mile ride. It was fast, intense, and painful...MAN IT WAS GREAT!!!!

cuda2k
01-27-07, 12:57 PM
I rode yesterday, and you're right, it was painful. No ride today it looks, but Ryan's bringing his trainer down for me to borrow tomorrow so I'll at least get some saddle time in.

Today I think, I'm just going to find the aluminum polish and work on the new hubs I bought to see how smooth I can get the bearings and how pretty I can get the shells without spending any more money (on new bearings)

HAHAHA - just walked outside, and it's raining now. Figures as much.

I think my ride this morning was my coldest ride ever. When we left it was 27 degrees but with the windchill it made it feel like 19 degrees. We had about 10 people still show up for the ride. We decided to cut the ride short and only did 30 miles. The first 10 miles were the most painful. After that I felt fine and we ended up having one hell of a ride.

01-28-07, 12:37 PM
Braver man than me Kevin. I stayed in and hooked up Ryan's trainer to the Flyte for about 15-20mins. After how much I drank last night, surprised I did that much! ;)

I actually was not going to go this morning but I was woke at 6:00 AM, my wife was soundly sleeping, there was nothing good on TV so I got dressed and headed out. I knew someone would be at the meeting spot and I was right.

Cuda -- I've got some spin DVD's that you can "backup" and use while you are on the trainer. They are some pretty good workouts. I have hill training, tempo training, sprint, and base training. They are kind of corny but the structured workouts are great. The tempo training DVD will have you sweating buckets. They work best if you have a computer with a rear wheel sensor and cadence but if you don't you can easily guage your cadence or just workout at a comfortable spin. There are alot of sections of the workout where it calls for 80RPM's but I will spin at 90-95RPM. The workouts are only 40 minutes so I like to increase the intensity.

Ok, here's proof it's cold in Dallas RIGHT NOW:

I must look like a wimp now, complaining of the cold and rain/drizzle. Looked at weather.com's weekend forecast. Y'all have it cold alright. Rain is out of the forecast down here finally. So the trainer will get some rest. That and this give my yards a chance to dry.

While I'm riding down down at the beach house, I'll dedicate a mile or beer to you, my northern bikeforum brothers...:D

My short ride today wasn't too bad after I picked up gloves at the store. Been riding a little bit about four days a week or so. Cold fingers from the lack of full fingered gloves was the worst part.

Jeez...not a lot of bike commuters hitting this thread I take it.

The ride home through the blowing snow was the best ride of the winter. Just wear layers of the kind of cycling gear and fabrics that work for you in the cold and enjoy!
