i just brought my bike into the LBS for a tune-up. It sounded like there was a creaking sound by my rear derailleur. So the guy took a look at it and said that he had to remove the freewheel on my 2001 Trek 5200 and regrease it. For future knowledge, if this ever happens again, how do i do this myself?

Freewheel or freehub/cassette?
Frewheel: Clamp the correct freewheel tool in a vice. Sit the wheel assembly down on the splining of the tool turn counter clockwise. If you dont have a vice you can hold the tool in the freewheel with the quick release and use a big wrench.
Freehub/cassette: Put a chain whip on the cassette, insert the tool in the cassette lock ring and turn it counter clockwise. The cassette will just slide off the freehub body. It is a keyed spline and will only go back on one way.

Freehubs can be lubricated and the entire unit can be replace. However, there are no meaningful internal parts inside that are replaceable.
