Smaller sprockets wear faster. They wear the whole drive train(chain, cassette and sprocket). However they save hassel in not getting hung as easy or getting bent due to missed grinds.

The best on the market right now is a Tree(they also make standard 44 type sprockets). They come in a ton of colors and have a lifetime warranty. So, it would be the last sprocket you would ever buy.

That said tons of other compines make good sprockets as well. A smart idea is to get a 7075 or any 7000 series aluminum sprocket. They are stronger and lighter than 6000 series aluminum models. The only drawl back is they cost more.
