And it was fantastic. It has been pretty warm here up to the last week, which has been dry/cold. All of this adds up to the roads being dry and cold before the snow started, so when I was riding (and it was pretty much virgin snow both ways) there was absolutely no ice under the snow. When I left there was about 2-3 inches, and by the time I got back it was 3-4 inches.

It was GREAT! Traction was not a problem (dry pavement under the snow, and I was on a bike path so there were no cars messing it up), and everything was gorgeous. It wasn't a real long ride (maybe ten miles, just to a 24 hour drug store and back), but it was fabulous. Too bad the ride to work tomorrow won't be as good (the cars will have made the streets pretty slippery by then, I'm sure).

At any rate, a night like tonight could sure be addicting!

I was practically giddy last night when I took my bike out in the snowstorm. I needed groceries anyway, so I hopped on my hybrid for the slightly hilly trek to my 24-hour warehouse foods. I haven't yet installed studded tires, so this ride was really an adventure. The ride there wasn't bad; I had sufficient traction up and down hills. The ride home was a little more intense with loaded panniers. I really had to stay focused on balance and traction. The only thing that broke the serenity of the wind and snowfall was the constant distant whine of emergency vehicle sirens.

I rode in conditions like that last year, 3-4" snow with no ice. It's rare here. It's a workout. I couldn't lean into turns and keep traction like on dry ground.
