Foo - CPU Fan

My CPU fan in my computer is pissing me off. Everytime the processor isn't idle, the fan runs at full speed. It's kinda loud and annoying. My housemates think there is a plane taking off in my room or something. Is there any way or any good software that can control the speed of the fan? When the fan is running at normal speed, it's quiet and I don't mind it. I just don't want it firing up everytime I play solitaire or open a window. :rolleyes: Does the fan really need to be running so fast to keep the CPU cool?

Via used to have a program called like "Vcore" or "FLight deck". They make speed controllers that would work with your CPU fan, it mounts right on a plate. If you really want peace and quiet, go with water cooling.

Water cooling??? Been to www.hardocp.com??? :D Back in the days overclocking was fun and cheap way to get some speed upgrade without spend an extra bug. Nowadays CPU runs so fast that gaining couple MHz on a 3GHz chip is pointless.

Might want to just look at getting a new cpu fan. Alot of the newer fans are much, much quieter. There is also software, that works with certain mb's/chips/fans that will do this also. Alot of older AMD's would also wind the cpu down additionally when you were idle. So the fan could go even quieter.

Of course the real solution would be getting a whole new pc. Most of the new Duo Core 2 machines that i've played with, you can just barely tell that it came on, when the case is off. The fans are just so ultra quiet.

Not in a second. Your computer may refuse to bootup because the motherboard should be able to detect whether or not your CPU fan is running. You also have a heatsink ontop of your CPU. So, your computer may freeze up during the booting up process to windows.....because of overheating. Just leave it alone if you are not used to upgrading and changing your CPU.

try speedfan

search google, its a free program that you can controll your fan speed and monitor temps

if you're interested you can get a bigger fan, which means it'll move the same amount of air but at lower speeds, and/or a control that can be mounted in one of your drive bays.

I was about to suggest speedfan, too.

Could the fan be really dirty and that's why it is working so hard? I just cleaned my recently and it helped a lot.

look at the heatsinks offered by Arctic Cooling. Good prices, good performance, and quiet.

No need to run another program to quiet a cooler down when your cooler actually is quiet.

Get a new heatsink and fan, one that runs quieter.

I'd take it off clean it and the processor with an alcohol wipe .. then reapply some thermal grease and put it back on or put a different one on.. also it could be a bios issue .. my system board has settings for fan speed.. maybe jack those up if they are present. Ive seen system boards with faulty capacitors cause this problem as well as the sensor on the board too.
