Southern California - Recommend a Bike Fitter in San Diego

My basic bike set-up hasn't changed in years but recently (especially at the Stagecoach) I have been having problems with shoulder pain. I doubt that bike fit is the problem (as opposed to being older and fatter :rolleyes: ) but I have never had a professional fitting and I would like to see if I am doing anything wrong.

Can anyone recommend a good bike fitter in the SD area? My goal is to maximize comfort, not necessarily power/performance.

Look up a guy named Dan Rock. He works at B&L (I think) and he's probably the best in SD.

I know Dan and respect him. He and I have different philosphies for fitting. By day I am a mild mannered reporter (oh sorry another Superman reference, some of you will get that joke) Ok I digress by day I am a bike fitter at Nytro. As most of you may know, Nytro is the most respected triathlon store in the nation. In addtion, to tri fits I do road fittings, 60/40% split respectively. I have fit literally thousands of athletes, from recreational to Ironman World Champions, in the last 3 years. On weekends I do at least 5 bike fits per day.

By night I run my own coaching business and do bike fits out of my home. I can be a resource if anyone choses to take my advice.

PS Oh and I have fit someone in the BF group already

It sounds like not much has changed with your stores attitude. When I lived in Encinitas and would come into your store, it seemed to take an act of god to get any positive help, other then you guys blowing your own horn. The attitude I and most people I rode with got from you guys was arrogant and self-important. It's why I never went back after I experienced it a couple of times.

If you go in on a spring or summer weekend, they are often VERY busy and it can be hard to get help, especially if there are lots of people looking at bikes. I ended up getting there when the store opened on Memorial Day so I could get helped, and ended up getting fitted on my new Cervelo Soloist by George (Vireo). I have had to tweek the fit a bit (dropping the saddle some), but that was because of factors that would not have shown up in an initial fit (tight hamstrings and saddle issues). I haven't taken it back up there, but that's mainly because it's a bit of a trip away from my home down in Clairemont.

California Bicycle recently expanded their showroom floor and has added a professional bike fitting service. They're located @ La Jolla Blvd & Pearl st...in La Jolla next to Symbolic. I was in there while the guys were setting it up and it's the full monty. They have the ability to hook your rig up to a computer in case the rider is interested in maximizing power output, etc. How about virtual riding any stage of the TdF? It's just sick.

The result of a proper fit is comfort as well as increased efficiency. Jose is the man to talk with down there. I rode with him up palomar mtn earlier this week...good man. If anyone decides to call you'd likely speak with Jason or Jeff initially. Good luck!

Actually, was that a huff? Really though, all the shops i frequent here in San Jose claim to be the best. I have yet to walk into one and have them tell me, oh so and so down the street is better then we are. I mean thats not logical. Ive also found that the good ones are busy and it takes longer to get helped. Besides there is nothing wrong with confidence. I am self employed, and at what I do I am one of the best in the area and I let people know that. havent advertised in years nor will I, referrals keep me very busy. If the shop is busy, Im sure there is good reason.

Although I'm in another line of business, I always tell my potential customers we're the best shop west of the Mississippi...:D

I have been riding/racing for over 20 years and taken my biz to many different shops in SD and up here in the LA area, and Nytro was one of the worst as far as their customer service went IMO. Their attitude is well known in N. County SD and most of the riders I know down there never cross their doorway due to this. Danno (Dan Rock) is one of the best there is in SD and he is always friendly, knowledgeable, and approchable, unlike the Nytro guys.

Sorry for the truncated text. Let me rephrase and say by those who have visited their shop. And of course this is a blanket statement and there are always exceptions to any absolutism. So of course your mileage may vary.

whenever i go there(nytro) and someone asks if i need help, i just say no. the one time i did have a question, i was told "try spinergy. they're pretty good." and he was right. good enough for me.
