I did an alleycat in NYC (put on by ch0mb0) that was like this and it was fun as hell, so get ready to have some of it (fun that is).

worst place to live in the country.

wasn't there some weird criteria for that statistic? i never heard or read the full story, but i find it hard to believe that allston, ma is the WORST place to live in the US. didn't east st. louis have the highest murder rate or something?

oh it was bs, but its just a fun stat to throw out all the time. I am a pretty big fan of my apartment and neighborhood.

I think allston/brighton did get up on one of those worst places to live lists.

is scramble-style different from regular alleycat-style? or are they just 2 different words for the same thing?

A scamble is different then a regular alleycat in that its in a smaller area with lots of checkpoints. In this case, the race take place within the allston/brighton lines... except the start.

As for the allston being the worst place to live in the country.... I read it in a book called like The Absolutely Worst Places to Live in America. Not really like a countdown thing... Cambridge got a (dis)honorable mention in there too.

I'm going to leave hints every week to some of the checkpoints... and to remind everyone that this is still happening.

Next hint. Another easy one.

And also, the "after party" with be a Schlitz Blitz @ 7PM (this could change) at Almay St. in Lower Allston. Bring $5.

i can't make it to the actual race because of a prior engagement (i live in opposite land, remember?) but later that evening, i think around 6pm, my younger brother's stoner metal band, elder, is playing a house show in allston, so if you guys aren't sure of an after-party you could always just move it to the show... if anyone wants details let me know.

also, here is their myspace: http://myspace.com/beholdtheelder

some point this weekend I'm going to try and rock that plan, i'll post up here if I do, if anyone wants to hang out/scout the territory/drink beer. I don't know how much free time I'll have though, it's a busy weekend for me.

i think i've got these two figured out, but after racing zelda, i can't help but think that maybe the pictures are a red herring. i recall (with a little embarrassment) spending a good deal of time with a map of boston, a highligher and a photocopied map of old boston before that race only to hear that it was useless.

...jacobs, i hope you can at least get a chuckle out of that!

I think some people misunderstood the purpose of that map. It was just to show the zip codes of different areas of Boston, nothing more. If I was racing, and hadn't decided what the checkpoints would be, I'd have found that information very useful when all I was given was an obscure street address and a zipcode.

I'm not expecting it too, but for all that I've lived in the area for a year and half, and I really don't know it that well, so this will also act as motivation to get my ass out the door and explore my current home turf a little more.

goldenskeletons
01-30-07, 08:08 AM
yeah. i thought the numbers on that map corresponded to checkpoints, but like i said, i recall that story with a little embarrassment. it was definitely a good idea though. the old boston map was great just to look.

i haven't tried it, but i will put it on the list... i have tried buddha's delight in chinatown and was not impressed... i hope i like my thai, since boston doesn't seem to have a lot of amazing vegan/vegetarian places.

This'll be my first alleycat. I'd be up for a ride Sunday to scout the area. I've lived here 11 years and rode through Allston all of 3 times.
