Would anyone actually spend $300 on bike pedals?

3 years ago I couldn't have imagined spending $300.00 for a bicycle.
but 3 yards for a set of pedals??
go ask the road forum guys, they spend big bucks for dumb things

I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea- there's nothing wrong with doing this if you have the money and the passion. I am just amazed at the price of some of the high end stuff out there.

Why would some moron spend 2 grand on a pair of wheels?

I spend 10$ tops on pedals. [My favorite pedals are $9 something]

Yes, if they weigh negative twenty pounds.

I spent 40 bucks on a set of steel/aluminum platform pedals in 1999. I used them for 6 years on several different bikes. I sent them to Siu with that Trek. They still work, but they are so beat up that she will be rightfully pitching them if she hasn't already. My other pedals came on my mountain bikes. A set of Icon's from my 98 Klein, and a set of Shimano's from My 98 Giant.

I never have and never will see the need to buy high priced pedals. Its like pet day care. Stupidest **** in the world. Sure, you could try and say that high end pedals work in the mud. I've crossed the state 6 times, and that includes all types of terrain and weather conditions. Loosen them up, keep them lubricated, and they will work fine.

Like others have said: If you've got the money and the passion, why not? I however, am a little lacking in the money part, so no, I wouldn't buy $300 pedals. Most expensive platforms I've ever bought were some $17 Wellgo's and most expensive clippless were some $50 Eggbeaters.

I'd spend it on pet daycare before I'd spend it on pedals. :D

I would use it to buy pedals for my dog's bike!

Why?

I just bought a pair of wellgo platforms for 19.99. Sealed bearings. Often times you pay for the brand name, and I personally think you can find similar quality for alot less.

300 is pretty expensive for pedals, I would not pay it ever. I payed 64 for my Candy SL's, that is about the max I will shell out for pedals.

Never.

I might (and only if they are full Ti) pay $300 for a cassette, but never a set of pedals.

mlts22
01-15-07, 07:59 PM
I'd pay well for a GOOD pair of platform/clipless pedals, but those things better cook and wash my dishes if I am going to shell out more than $100 or so for them.

Some women spend over a grand on a purse. Does that mean I get to sign on the dotted line for a Ducati as long as I avoid expensive purses and shoes? hehe

It's idiotic because it's something YOU wouldn't spend money on? Some folks might think spending over 200 on a bike is idiotic. It's all a matter of opinion.

No not really. The pair I have on right now I got for free from my friend who didn't want them anymore. I know he did pay 110$ for them however. :)

NOS Campagnolo C-Record Track and Toshi Double Straps.

Yup.

$300 Vs. an ambulance ride is a good investment if you fide fixed and your pedals are effectively your brakes!

That's like asking "would you buy a $300 harness for repelling?"---answer: Yup.

With the womens shoes though, it is stupid to make that comparison. People who pay 300 dollars for shoes are not paying for functionality but rather looks, while if you want to huck 8 foot drops, then you are going to NEED a bike that can do it, and that may be expensive. If you want to walk ,you dont NEED 300 dollar shoes.

My last set of Shimano Dura Ace SD -SLs were $140 bucks, but retail on them is upwards of $300. So I guess the answer is yes, if I wanted them bad enough. I use Ultegras on all my other bikes, but wanted the best for my last project.

I don't like how expensive some bike stuff is...but it's my biggest passion and I don;t have any kids..so why not.

Yes, people do.

You could ask this about high-end products in any area.

In my view, unless you have a lot of money to burn, the performance benefit of $300 pedals versus $150 ones doesn't justify the extra cost. But I don't buy for everyone.

If you want to bike, you don't NEED a $300 bike. If you want to look stunningly put together and NOT have massive pain from the shoes, you will spend the money on them.

Most I've spent is about $50 a pair for clearance cross trainers, but there are worse ways to spend money. Like snorting a grand worth of coke off of the ass of a $15K escort.

My 200 dollar Red Wings were worth every penny. Not for style, but because they last. 4 brutaly tough years, and they seem good to go for another 2 at least.

Me, no. I spent $40 on my current platforms. They're light enough for me and they seem well made.

But I have a friend who just bought a $400 headlight kit for his Jetta just "because" (what's up with VW people, anyway? I'm not talking about people who drive VW's, but VW people...there's a difference). For any given item, there's people out there who won't think twice about spending 3 times what an ordinary person would on it. If you ever have questions about the human capacity to blow money on nothing, pick up a Neiman Marcus catalog.

Also, I could understand a really nice set of titanium clipless retailing for $300.

Yes, to go along with my $9000 custom bike... that's assuming I had the disposable income to drop 9 g's on a bike in the first place. Seeing that I don't, I can't. But if I had the dough, I would.

For now I have to live with my Nashbar sale priced $50+ Look pedals. :)
