Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Steinwerks Hubs...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

They sponsor people who might not be able to afford quality hubs...
Products seem decent... anyone know of them?
Maybe a group purchase? To get their product some exposure?

I tried for half of last year to get a pair of these hubs after the owner said he would sell them to me at cost since there is no local dealer in Austin. The fellow comes back later and says he can't get liability insurance, so he can't sell me the hubs. I offered to sign a waiver or whatever, but no dice. Good luck.

I would sell some unessential part of my anatomy for a set of these. Anybody in the market for a little toe?
Yeah, weird thing... I tried to get them too, but got the same 'insurance' excuse.

Weird. It seems like these are not really on the market yet. They look pretty cool though.

Over the summer, I called up the one dealer they had listed. They were nice, but the guy I talked to had never actually heard of steinworks.

That's all part of the challenge. Only the most 1337 pimps can mess with these hubs. Yo I heard even the MASH kids can't get 'em!! OMG!!
nein, but maybe my girlfriend. she likes techno...
Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o'clock this afternoon... with nail polish. These ****ing amateurs...
Unobtanium? High flange? Stupid smooth ceramic bearings?! OMGZERZ SIGN ME UP!
The only other hubs I've messed with that had that type of "'C' clamp design" were White Industries tandem hubs and it was the most frivilous, hard to adjust mechanism this side of mid 90s Campy free hub bodies.

Do they even exist? Sounds like all we have to go on is pictures on some website. Have these ever been spotted in the wild. Anyone can have a set of hubs machined in whatever shape they want. It's even easier if they don't actually have to work, just look good...
Hey their marketing speak sounds good, and the pictures look great, but whenever they use terms like "available" and "on the market" I have to snicker. Claims that these hubs are available put into question the veracity of other claims they make about their hubs.

These look nice and fancy and all that, but it's not like there's
a lack of high-end track hubs out there. I don't really see what
these guys are bringing to the table that Dura-Ace or Phil isn't
already offering. Nevermind the fact that these basically don't
even exist.

A new aesthetic is what I see... kinda like those mack hubs.. I love the industrial raw look.

Well if that's the case, then I think they are almost
indistinguishable from Phils, especially at a distance
of more than a few feet.

Both look great, but I don't see a substantial difference.

It's all about the small details.. like the machining around the spoke holes on the macks (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=160354):

See, I think those Macks stand out a lot more from the other
two. Definitely more of an industrial, machine-age look. I
dig 'em.

Microsoft Marketing on the Steinworks.
I posted about this a while back. I was able to get in contact with the guy running the show. Apparently they started to distribute them, and then heard horror stories about product liability from dealers. Unfortunately, the liability insurance has so far proved to be prohibitively expensive. Barring some extraordinary change of events, these aren't going to see the light of day.
Goldtec (https://www.betd.co.uk/product_list.asp?CategoryID=15) hubs look to be a similar sort of thing to mack hubs. They are pretty expensive and probably hard to get outside the Uk. For those in the Uk they are arguably superior to phils but much cheaper.

So without any known issues with the product they just got spooked at the prospect of getting sued and decided to pull them? I love America.

They might not. It might be a relable or sponsor job.
If they are nimbles, then yeah they come in 650c. A mate has a set on a litespeed TT bike which is 4 sizes too small for him.

Lobular Pista. They make 'em but don't regularly import them to the states.
Orbea dealer may be able to order one for you

maybe orbea can't afford liability insurance to protect against dumbasses who ride brakeless on the STREET.
Seriously,
i feel for the guy. the amount of time and sweat, not to mention $$$, only to have your product shelved. brutal.
someone should contact this guy for a group buy. let's live dangerously.

There is a messenger lady in toronto who rides a really nice orange orbea track bike. By all the reinforcing gussets on it it seems like a sprinting bike. I always take a moment to look it over when I see it outside a building. I guess it was custom?

Cheap and good. My rear wheel hasn't gone out of true in two years of fairly hard riding.
edit: I might be able to tempt you a bit more as I have a Goldtec front hub (36h pewter) that I bought in the Gearshift sale but was the wrong colour. Send a PM if you want it
