Track Cycling: Velodrome Racing and Training Area - Track Cyclig FAQ or Intro?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Does anyone has and FAQ or Intro to track cycling.
As an avid mountain biker and occasional spectator of road racing I am considered the cycling expert in the family, but I cannot understand how track cycling works. Scratch, points, teams, etc.
Some basics to understand it from the spectator point of view would be helpful for me.

Thanks everyone!
A post with all the great links you provided should be sticky. After all, it seems that even among cyclist, track racing is a mystery and it always helps the sport when people understands what they see in the track.
(Mexico had a woman winning silver in points race in the past Olympics but not many people got interested because all they knew was that she won silver, they could not understand how she did it, even after looking several repetitions of the race).
there are some very good articles and tips posted at the Superdrome

The first rule of track cycling is, do not talk about track cycling.

How fast does one have to be competitive(i.e. not embarassed) in a 1 km race(women's)?

Anything under 1.35 is fine. Under 1.25 is good. Sub 1.20 you're truly competitive at good club level.
