General Cycling Discussion - Daily Rides?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey everyone,
I'm sure I'm not the only one here, but even on long workdays during the week, I can't resist but hopping on the bicycle for a short hop. For example, today I just hopped around a few roads by my house for 2.71 miles after a day of working. It's a very hilly area and even a couple miles feels very gratifying in these parts. Plus, it's just so much fun to feel the air rushing by. Now it seems like I take a ride like this everyday now. They're short, fun (especially in my area) and don't take too much time; you can get a fun ride for your daily fix in 20 minutes. And then you don't have to wait a week in between the big week-end rides. Does it get any better than that?
Anybody else find themselves taking these short daily hops even during the week?

I live near many short quick trails. I do hop and go. I find I push for serious speed and just explode through the trails. Where if I am doing a long haul I usually take my time and do some coasting. So yes I definately do the short runs sometimes. :)

There is a 22 mile stretch of straight up and down hills between my work and home. I saw a lone cyclist out there yesterday, peddling towards me, with a phalanx of cars passing him up a hill. Now THAT was a cyclist in my opinion. To brave the hills when he could be at the Comet Trail within 15 driving minutes in a car. - Ted
I try to ride every day, especially the bad work days. Sometimes I don't feel like it at first, like today. After I get going all my troubles melt away and I don't want to quit.
I try to get at least 10 miles in but Ill take 6 if that's all I can get.
All in all (though) I would perfer at least 2 hours because it takes about 20 - 30 minutes to get my blood going and start feeling good.

I have to rest a couple days a week. So, I don't ride every day.

In good weather I try to ride five or six days a week. If I get on the bike, I go at least ten miles, and after work, usually no more than fifteen miles; it depends on the time I think I have. I try to ride twenty to forty miles on Saturdays--twenty if it's an afternoon ride, and thirty to forty if it's an early morning ride. Once or twice a week I might concern myself with my average speed. Hills are unavoidable on these rides, though cyclists in mountain states would probably scoff at calling them hills. Because family always takes precedence over riding, I sometimes find myself in the minivan glancing wistfully at the cyclists on the road.

I hate looking at the cyclist on my way home from work.
I can't resist. If I don't really have the time,
I will still go for a "quickie".

Every chance I get, now that the weather is better. You're right, even a couple miles does wonders for the attitude.
Gotta go whenever there's a break in the clouds! :D
i do a 10-20km a day, and 20+ when i really feel good.
its hasn't rained in weeks, well at least in the afternoon when i usually do my ride.
i work from 9am to about 12pm. i go out at 4pm and finish at around 4:45 and get back at work at 5pm.
i keep my rides unique.. i go on a different route everyday.. nearly lost my way yesterday. ended up in a really rough dusty road.. i can see are dump trucks parked in a vacant lot(it really helps if you plan your route).
But the ride must go on..
I have never been a person for really short rides. However this week I had to start work early so I couldn't ride in. Instead I went for a 1/2 hour ride around the estate with my lights, after work. Apart from being cold (heading into winter here) it was very quiet and somehow felt faster, but was only 21kph. I had to start early again today so I will try for another ride tonight. Hopefully I can get an hours ride in.
It's not great but it is better than no riding at all.
CHEERS.

Generally my "fun" rides are longer than my commute.

I try to take my dog for a run with my bike which will be ~2.5 miles over dirt road and hay field. Sometimes after that if I have time I go for a longer ride while the dog eats her supper.

I try to ride 3-4 times a week. 20 miles per ride. The only short ones I have tried are on the trainer, where I do 10 miles sprinting at each mile.
I ride just about every day. Some days are the short hop, other days are the long hauls. I'm enjoying the long hauls, only now it's just making my legs hurt a little. Still, I'm ok with that!
Gotta take advantage of this good weather when we get it!
