Southern California - How much should I ask for my MTB?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Our financial situation and my lack of use of the mountainbike has me ready to put it on Craigslist, but I'm not sure what it might be worth. It's a hodge podge I built myself, so I thought I'd list the parts and get your recommendations. Of course, if anyone is interested, there will be an ad in the For Sale forum later.

No idea what to ask for it, but be ready to be contacted by all the lowballers, flakes, and idiots. I sell stuff on CL from time to time, but it can be a real hassle dealing with some of the people on there.
Good Luck!

Yeah, Craigslist seems to be like the Recycler, you get plenty of looky-loos who call but aren't really interested and people who want something for almost nothing, then there's even sellers that think their stuff is worth more than it was brand new (a guy wanted to sell his 1990 Specialized Sirrus for $700!). But that's why I want to start out with a reasonable price so I'm not one of the crazies.

I've sold mix and matched bikes before and what I did was list it for half retail of the total for all my name brand parts. That gets a little more difficult in your situation since you have 90's parts but you get the idea.

Yeah it's tricky with the old and the newer. It started out as the downhill bike for Josh Lynn (Earthquake Jake's 1/2 brother), then he sold the frame to me, which I outfitted with downhill parts. After I stopped racing, I wrecked my cross country frame and cranks, so I switched the surviving components to the DH bike, buying new cranks and BB and selling the DH cranks. It works great, but I just have been focussing on road lately.

I'd try around 400-500 for a bit then go lower if no one bits on it. It's almost one of those things there at a certain point its better to keep then sell for a couple hundred bucks.
You can always try ebay too.

Just be firm when selling on Craigslist, and if no one bites, then start lowering your price.
I recently sold a few items on Craigslist (drum kit, slot machine, car seat), and usually get people who are pretty serious. They'll try to haggle you when they get to your place, but be firm and let them know you have others interested, and they usually pay asking price.
I actually sold my 1995 Dyno VFR BMX bike over the weekend within a day of listing it without any issues.
Good luck!

No pics yet, but I have a digital camera and will take pics soon. It's at my parents' house so I need to bring it home to take pics and have it available to show potential buyers. I'm not too interested in ebay because I don't feel like shipping a bike.
