Foo - Coffee Question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Im horrendously exhausted, with such a long day, and homework that needs to be done. I just brewed up some organic coffee with whatever water I had, and chugged down quite a few cups. I just hope that I didnt over do it with the caffine. How many cups should one not exceed at one sitting?

Up to 10 cups at one sitting is ok, and quite good for the ol' colon. Unless you're going to bed within the hour, in which case you'll lie in bed, gettin' up every two hours to pee, and wondering why the hell you even give a **** about your colon.
Coffee is nasty. Instead of making actual coffee, I think I would put all the whole coffee beans into a bowl, pour Hershey's chocolate syrup all over them, and eat them with a spoon like a bowl of cereal. :) I'm gonna have to try that some time...
haha. Well I had 5 cups of coffee and fat free milk. For anyone who likes coffee, soymilk (preferrably vanilla) makes the drink super tasty and very smooth,

Make sure you cook the beans first to make em all mushy or you'll break a tooth:D

Oh yeah, no problem. I probably haven't had one since November or early December. But...classes are starting again for me. I'll have a lot more work and studying than last semester, so...anything is possible.

have you checked your blood pressure anytime recently? I was at the docter a while back in october and they said mine was high. Well it was 20 over the normal number for the numerator part but the bottom # was fine lol however inwhich blood pressure is measured, yeah.:D

Heh, not for a couple of years. But they last time it was checked, it was pretty low. I don't remember what the numbers were... I just quit the "Green Go Juice" because it didn't actually help me stay awake or make me smarter or anything. I'd just get all jittery, and then fall asleep in class. :p

Ideally, you want to have it in a slow French-style drip over a glass. In the bottom of the glass is something like sweetened condensed milk. When it's done dripping, you stir it up, then pour it over a second glass of ice. <middle finger and thumb, kissed> Magnificent! :D

You need to get that blood pressure handled before you get down on the caffeine, bro'. <very serious Vega look>

Indeed, it is, Sistah Siu. You can find this in the "I sit, you work" fashion at any Vietnamese or Thai restaurant. :D
[even if it's not on the menu, just ask for it. Like asking for fried shrimp heads or marinated baby octupus at a good sushi/sashimi restaurant]

I always say -- and please, quote me on this, because it's original --
coffee, like chocolate, is meant to be consumed with plenty of fat and sugar added.
Hence, I always take cream (and Splenda, which actually has a better flavor and is easier to use than sugar in coffee)
P.S. But NEVER, NEVER -- do you understand me? NEVER use FLAVORED CREAM in your coffee!!!

Coffee Ritual.
Conical burr grinder set to coarse.
Run beans through. Place in stainless steel french press.
Add water that's about 185*F. Start timer.
Stir with chopstick. Watch as water erupts with foam (the bloom) from the CO2 still outgassing from freshly roasted, perfectly ground coffee beans. Inhale the vapors.
Wait until timer reaches 4 minutes. Stop stirring.
Wipe chopstick with a napkin and set it aside.
Press coffee.
Pour into a pre-warmed ceramic coffee mug.
Dump coffee grounds out.
Disassemble and clean all parts of the coffee press.
Dry and re-assemble coffee press.
Put coffee press, chopstick, grinder, and beans away.
Enjoy pure, strong, rich, flavorful black coffee with absolutely no additives.
It's almost spiritual. Organic beans roasted locally in small batches, ground as needed, brewed in single servings with precision and care, and savored to the last drip. On average, the above ritual is executed between 4-8 times daily.
But, I've had at least 20 cups of coffee in a work day when I worked at a place where co-workers knew how to brew coffee and maintain the equipment. It won't hurt you, just make your annoyingly frequent urinal visits smell and look funny.

Dark roast beans of some kind, ground fine at home, done in the French press. A dollop of half & half. Mmmmmm, oh yeah. Or an Americano. Or a well made cappucino, if I've got some sort of worthy deser to go with.
Sugar? Flavored creamers? Flavored coffee? Soy milk? Blech. Drinking coffee adulterated with such as that makes me gag. But, to each their own I suppose.
If you're drinking more than a cup or two at a time, upping your water intake is a good idea as well. Enough caffeine can contribute to significant dehydration. I normally add an extra glass of water for every cup of coffee.

Yeah...........if you drink alot be sure you are near a bathroom because it is like a laxative eventually and will have you reading in no time.
I generally drink at most three cups in a sitting...............but I drink decaf so I am not looking for the rush of caffeine but rather the taste without the tumor producing side effects of caffeine.

I used to do that. Add a heat tab and boil water in my canteen cup. That was on my canoe. On land, I just put the heat tab on the ground. Pour in that delicious freeze-dried coffee the Army makes. heaven. If in a hurry, just pour the dry coffee down your throat and wash it down with some cold water.

Work midnight shifts. You'll wish caffeine had a stronger rush. The acid is not good for one's stomach. Even tho certain brews, I could drink all day. Midnight shift, I'd drink it all nite long. Now, I try to limit myself to like three cups a day. I like Blue Mtn. when I can afford it. A regular brew is Kenya. Less acid, it seems to me.

People who actually like coffee drink it black. Cream, sugar, and syrups are there to cover up bad coffee. If you find it too bitter you might not be using the best brew method. Coffee presses will give you all the flavor without a lot of acid or bitterness, just roasty goodness. Try it, you'll probably like it.
As for the orignal question, I've heard 100mg of caffeine an hour is a good amount to wake you up without feeling the crash. That's about 2 ounces of espresso (for comparison (http://wilstar.com/caffeine.htm), a can of average cola is around 40mg).
I have found that 100mg just won't cut it. I use a burr grinder and a French press. With the right beans that'll give you upwards of 400mg for a 16oz cup. It wakes me up in the morning, but can also keep me from sleeping if I drink it after 5pm.

I hear ya, cyclezealot, regarding the midnight shift needs.
I lived on coffee while taking care of my husband. As a sole caregiver, I never had the choice of when to go to bed since his needs varied, and were, at best, predictably unpredictable. At one point, in 2004, I spent several months with only two hours of sleep a night, caught in quick 30-minute power naps.
I'd drink coffee during the day, but found that drinking warm/hot liquid in the middle of the night tended to leave me feeling sleepy, in spite of the caffeine. So, I took to "eating" instant coffee, and washing it down with a small amount of water or orange juice, and a small piece of chocolate. To avoid acid problems, I ate Kava, which is vile and much like eating mud. Ergo, the chocolate chaser! And I'd easily eat 10 spoonfuls over the course of a few hours. That's where my "10-cup" comment came from, BTW, eubi.
Was not my ideal choice of coffee, or the way to enjoy it, but it was what I had to do under the circumstances. It worked to keep me awake and alert enough for the care required. And that's what mattered....
Hm. Maybe all that caffeine is still in my tissues, and that's part of my latent insomnia? <serious Vega look>

I like the Tichy shops. You can get Palatschinken with your coffee. But I do most of my eating and coffee-housing in the fifth district (one favorite is the Siebenbrunnencafé, which is full of kitschy statues and art), unless I'm meeting up with friends in the center city, am Graben, for instance, for some reason. Dorothéegasse and a number of shops along Mariahilferstrasse are good, too. For good wine, I go to the Heurigen in the outlying districts. Are you often in Vienna?
