Riding around here right now is out of the question so to keep fit I have been doing various squats and swimming. Anyone keep their fitness in check and strengthen the core in the pool? Legs only is a killer BTW.

Try treading water for 20 minutes, and then 5 minutes of using legs-only, and then 5 minutes of legs only with your hands/arms out of the water.

That builds some character.

Just treading water legs only? That is a piece of cake. Try arms fully out of the water, preferable chest out at least enough to keep nipples out of the water. To keep in interesting try moving sidewas at the time.

Very basic Water Polo training.

I wish I liked the pool, but I hate the clorine smell so I'm stuck with the gym.

Yeah....that came in after the 25 minutes of treading....we started playing around with a beachball to keep it interesting.

This was also after a swim test.

Salt water makes it easier.

holding a 1-gallon water jug overhead in each hand.

Actually one done by many golies is to use a 5 gallon bottle held directly overhead and continuing until the water runs out, then rest while refilling... repeat. Very nasty workout as the weight keeps decreasing as you get more tired, enabling you to stay at the limit for longer than you could with a constant weight.

All good coaches have a sadistic streak.

I do the water treading thing with my arms out of the water. I find it works well.

This is by far the best leg workout I myself have ever done.

Does the egg beater form translate well to improve the muscles for cycling? Doing lengths legs only holding on to a flutter board is similar to cycling cross training as the same muscles are used I think.

I am not sure how egg beater improves muscles for cycling specifically. Many people on this forum love swimming for a cross training regime. I would think the largest improvement you will see in regards to cycling would be an increase in your a keep aerobic capacity. Doing lengths with the board is a good workout as well, try and mix it up with fins, or holding your breath.
