It's actually -30 or more, with the wind chill...
This is what our harbour looks like:

End times!
Fahrenheit or celsius? Either way, I'm glad I live where 45f is cold.
Damn, I thought just a week ago you were having mild temps!
That's intense.
It's in the low 20's as a high, teens at night here. That damn Polar Jet!

It was -7º F on my ride into work. It's edged up to -4º by now. Winter is finally here.

This is Halifax, NS, Canada. So that's -30C, which is around -22F. It's been very mild lately and it's supposed to go back up to +10C on Friday, so this cold snap is really surprising.
Extreme temperatures bring out only the most dedicated cyclists and I am more than fine with that.

'Tis true. There was a lot of eye rolling and head nodding this morning with my chilly cycling bretheren.

Same thing here in VT. Been above freezing most of the winter so far, but it looks like we have normal winter weather for the rest of the week to come. Below freezing, but not nearly as cold as today.

Amazing!
The beauty of cold weather far outdoes warm weather in my opinion. Being that cold sucks because it is hard to go outside, but on a cold, sunny day with blue skies it just looks so clean and crisp. Love it.

not to wish you any horrible weather, but i'm glad it's freakin cold SOMEWHERE. the east coast has been having this sissy weather, which while i enjoy from a comfort standpoint, it really makes me start worrying about global warming and such...
Those are awesome photos! I've decided as a privileged, 30-something woman, I'm no longer riding when it is below 20F, unless plyed by special events.

agreed. it's one of the reasons i love november. it's usually moderately cold, and kind of bleak and grey most of the time. the beauty of cold weather can be awesomely depressing.

I don't remember CO ever being THAT cold...or have things changed???
those pics are awesome.
yesterday was the first really cold day in NYC that i remember, and tons of people were still out riding, just doing it more poorly. i wanted to punch a lot of people.
riding home around 1am i met up with my arch nemesis, black ice, and almost ate it but managed to maintain.
once i went camping and it was -20f. ****ing awesome. we stayed in a cabin with no power or heat, just a cast iron stove, and to do dishes we had to hack a hole in the river then boil the water. the outhouse had icesicles on the toilet seat and my bag froze to ground.

Nice to know you're having winter this year! I was talking to someone who lives in Halifax in December, who said it hadn't gotten cold yet.

Haha, we broke all the previous warmth records for January here. 18°C and stuff like that. 60F and more for you with your silly scale.
It's totally crazy... we somehow skipped winter completely this year. It hasn't even snowed yet. I guess you got two servings over there to compensate:)

Heheh, nope, this is the first snap of cold we've received on the east coast of North America. It has been unbelievably mild and all anyone has been talking about is our impending doom due to global warming. The west got a ton of snow though, which is also unusual. Maybe it is the End Times?

That's some serious hardcore riding when it gets below 0F. We've been in the upper teens and lower 20F temps for the early morning hours here in Seattle metro area, and that's been plenty cold enough for me.

So this is why Ricky and Julian go to jail every winter, to escape the Nova Scotia cold. Too bad Bubbles lives in the shed.

Sunday, went riding in shorts and a tshirt.
Yesterday, I overheard a coworker complaining no one carried snow chains in the Houston area.
It sure has been a freaky "winter". Being used to 100 degrees in the summer has me bundled up like an eskimo right now. Thanks to threads like this I have a rebuttal to the "your crazy for riding in the cold" comments.

Yeah, the northeast has been warm so far this winter, but yesterday woke up and it was 19 degrees Fahrenheit on the thermometer, with a mean wind blowing. Thankfully I finally picked up a set of rollers! I have been going on short rides for a few days in a row to get my balance on them; they definitely were challenging at first.
But, I went for my first long ride yesterday. Went for thirty minutes straight and put in around fourteen miles. It was so much fun I went for a few more rides throughout the day.
Rollers are really great and I already love them. They take balance and concentration, but I like trying to focus on my breathing and clear my mind - a bit of in-saddle meditation. I'd rather be outside, and while I can commute in this type of cold, longer rides can be tough with the wind, snow, ice, nose drip and painful lungs.

winter just started this week in Toronto, we actually have a bit of snow.
Riding to school yesterday it was around -22C with the wind.
Looks like it's supposed to warm up at the end of the week to +1c though.

I've been riding every day to work and this was the first day that I copped out and took a cab. It was -25C and although the winds were only 10km/h, it was blowing in the wrong direction. I checked a chart and figured out if I rode even at a slow 15km/h, the windchill was going to be near -40C.
Sometimes you gotta know when to fold'em.

Most years it's not. This year, it was pretty much in the 60's until December and then it suddenly started dumping tons of snow on us and it's been in the teens and 20's (or less) since, though it finally got back up into the 30's this week.

You should ride on studs. About a hundred studs (on a 700C) are already enough to keep you from falling on black ice.

I had my first black ice experience ever today, Santa Cruz California...we are not used to this.

while i consider myself to be a strong environmentalist, let's be honest people. this warm winter cannot be attributed to global warming. global warming is going to produce a few degrees warming over the entire globe, not 40 degree warmer winters.
this winter is largely a product of el nino, although im sure climate change has its effects.

Sorry, but that's notorious bull.
Global warming is exactly supposed to produce this kind of widely-fluctuating weather patterns, because it is the logical and expected effect of introducing more energy into the system. What do you think was the cause of Hurricane Cathrina, and all the other strong hurricanes that were battering the USA in the past few years?
