Foo - How dumb and uncaring can people be?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A radio station held a contest to win a Wii machine, seeing how much water people could drink without peeing; one woman died (obviously of water intoxication). But the kicker? A nurse called the show during the contest to warn that people can DIE from water intoxication and the radio show host replied, "Yeah, we're aware of that. They signed releases so we're not responsible, okay?"

Sure but most people have no idea you can become sick from drinking too much water and according to the article, none of the contestants were able to hear the nurse that called in warning of the dangers of over-hydration, whereas the DJ did and said he didn't care.

So it was someone elses fault that "she" was an idiot and drank too much water for a $250 game?????? A little thing called "personal responsibilty" goes a long way.

And while I agree with you in principle (and I would more strongly agree if the contest had been a 'drink the most beer and win a Wii' kind of thing), most people aren't aware of the dangers of drinking too much water. We see people cram dozens of hot dogs in their faces to win prizes seemingly without consequence. And water is just one of those things that is good for you, seemingly. We're supposed to drink water. We are mostly water. So I understand how the woman wouldn't have known that too much water can be fatal. The radio station bears the lion's share (no pun intended) of the responsibility here, IMO.

I read the article and it talked about how much water they drank. It didn't sound like all that much compared to what we cyclists drink on a hot long where we are riding for a couple of hours.
Was the issue that it didn't have the electrolytes in it and so it diluted those in her system to a dangerous level? Or was she not used to it? Or did she just drink too much at one time as opposed to when we ride and drink a little bit every 10-15 min?

Well I heard that once the radio show host mentioned that his friend the shock jock from another station mentioned that he new a guy that ran a cyclist off the road and laughed about it...:D oops, dang thats the advocacy forum. Hmm, ok, I heard that the radio show host said Campagnolo was a load of crap and that his Shimano could stomp it into the ground anyday! Hows that?
Guys a jerk. But then again as for talk show hosts Ecclesiastes says it best.-

And, now the reason this should stay in road cycling. Obviously, not everyone is aware of the dangers of drinking too much water without balancing the electrolytes. It is a danger for cyclists because we DO drink a lot of water during long rides on hot days, so this is something we should all be aware of.

The difference being a typical adult can sweat quarts an hour in hot weather thus losing the water. A wise contestant on this contest would run or work out if they were allowed thus, they wouldn't be peeing but instead sweating it out. A person just sitting and drinking and not paying attention to a sick feeling would indeed overload on water, especially in lower or temperate temperatures.

I can also see the transition point when it was moved.....difference in posting attitude!
This seems to be what radio is becoming
Politics - hate filled propaganda, mostly for Republicans who gave them the public airways under Newt Gingrich's contract on America.
Sports - Some of the most vicious hate radio on the airs, and sorry to say that racial is the majority of the hate rants on those programs.
Morning drive time shows - These are suppose to be "funny" shock radio, they are FAR from funny. They are mean and hateful, some have promoted running over bicyclist to the listeners. Road rage stories are told with pride and a snicker.
Womens Help Shows - Dr Laura comes off like a "tough love" adviser, bull, she's part of the Republican propaganda machine, seeding mistrust of Dems with every show. Of course over the years she has praised Bush and Cheney for their honesty.....yeah, right!
Woman dies drinking too much water, and not releiving herself in a radio contest....look at we've become as a nation...shame.

Sports radio is filled with hate and racism? Not the shows I hear (including some national ones). You must have a lot different radio than I do. Often, commentators go out of their way to avoid discussing racial issues.

One time, this ninja flipped out and killed an entire town just because some kid dropped a spoon. That's pretty uncaring.
I heard a lot of the audio, of the contest. The DJ's were typical male radio show DJ's. There are lots of this format in the US where you have two balding fat guys hosting a show and bringing in naked girls, talking about raunchy subjects and hosting stupid contests like this one.
These guys were completely laughing at all of the notions that somebody might die. At one point a female caller calls in to tell the DJ's that this is dangerous and that somebody might die. They just bagged on her and made fun of her. They then started to ask if there were any dead contestants. "Steve, are you dead yet," they quipped. Then they actually asked the girl that died, "Julie (not sure of name) are you dead yet?"
"No, she replied, but I have a bad headache and I am getting dizzy." They continued to laugh and joke. At some point later she died. They obviously didn't really think she was going to die, but there is plenty of negligence. The girl is responsible too, but she already paid the price. Others should too.

Naw. It's not common knowledge that a water overdose can kill or cause brain damage. I know plenty of doctors, nurses, and EMTs who didn't learn this until it came up in their medical training. I know cyclists (myself included) who only learned about water overdoses because it was relevant to cycling.
The woman who died after the contest wasn't necessarily stupid; she was just missing a crucial piece of data. Maybe the radio guys didn't know it was dangerous either, and dismissed the nurse who warned them as a crackpot. If they really did know they were endangering their contestants' lives, and didn't care because everyone had "signed releases," then they deserve to fry.

Basic rules of life:
1) too much of anything is harmful
2) everything is harmful in some way if used wrong.
3) if doing something makes you feel ill...STOP...it's hurting you
Failure to regard rules 1-3 will result in bad things happening....

The entire thing is stupid. Who drinks water -endlessly- just to win a ******** game console thing?
Who does that to themselves? A game. Not money that COULD be used for something important
a game.
just a game thing
When I was 6 or so we had this thing called Atari
I didn't cry over not having one. I eventually did get one ..my brothers gave me theirs as they moved onto nintendo
But I wouldn't have drank water to win one
I wouldn't have kept myself from going to the bathroom to win one
That's sick. Pathetic.
"Chico State University student died after drinking too much water in a hazing incident at a fraternity."
That sounds about right. People will do anything to fit in. They'll lose themselves in order to fit in.
When did game console status equate into whether one is popular or not? Probably around the same time people everywhere got fat.
Some people say the stupid get what they deserve
Maybe the stupid outweigh the smart ..literally
maybe the "smart" are just as stupid for letting the stupid do as they wish without saying a word against it
I mean
those other senior kids must have known some stuff
they're in college
Maybe they aren't smart at all
Those at the station
They knew of the dangers they say
?
They must not be very smart, either
So we put these people in jail? We don't win this war by putting smart-stupids in jail. why not put the other stupid people in jail? ..those that actually do what they're told to do in order to win games or a place within the family
Because we look to the "smart" to do what is right and to keep people -"stupids"- safe from themselves?
Sure
But these people are clearly not the smart people we are after
They're just as much the victims here as those they kill through their stupid games and hazing rituals
We should toss these people into school
Not our schools, though
Our schools are assembly lines for stupids making
