I've been refurbing an old Nishiki Olympic 12 and just changed the cables last night. Wow, these teflon coated cables are awesome! The shifting is so much smoother. The previous shifting wasn't bad, but I wasn't sure how old the cables were, since I bought this bike used. I am truly amazed with the improvement in shifting with new cables.

So if your shifting sucks, try some teflon cables.

OR you can do what I do. I have Dura Ace stainless steel cables and housing. When I bought the cables I flooded the cable housing with Finish Line Teflon Oil. The shifting is EXTREMELY smooth and so is the braking. No stickyness what so ever.

AlphaGeek, where did you buy those cables? I received an Olympic 12 in great condition as a gift the other day and wanna do some refurbishing as well.

So new cables make that much of a difference? I've been thinking of getting some new ones for the front/rear derailer. How can you tell if they need replacing, or can you just feel it in the shifting?
