For my daughter's 13th birthday I'm building up an old pearlescent pink Trek frame ca. 1981

It's going to get flat or riser bars and 8 speed gripshift because that's what she's comfortable with, and suits her riding style, and 700c wheels with wide road tires, because she doesn't like skinny tires.

I'm asking you all here, because the monochromatic themes are so popular, and I think she'd like it as pink as can be, perhaps with some blue to go with the blue in the logo panel.

I'm going to get one of the Nashbar women's racing saddles in pink for sure, but wondering what other pink parts folks have found. Pink tires would be way cool, but I'm thinking in 38c+ sizes that might not be possible.

Cool present.

You should get a 7 speed internal hub (going cheap these days) with a grip shift. That will make it a real no fuss bike for a 13 year old. Then you could use a pink chain.

I've heard pretty bad things about the seven-speed Nexus
hubs. Apparently Shimano greatly improved upon them
with the eight-speed variety.

As a replacement for her old MTB it's getting a triple and 8-speed cassette. We live in a hilly town and she likes her gears. Also she already has an internal hub bike since I gave her my Triumph 3-speed (http://velospace.org/node/1028). She liked it and it was really too small for me, plus it made a great replacement for her Western Flyer (http://velospace.org/node/312) which she outgrew.

i've only seen them for $150ish, which doesn't count as cheap to me. where are they going for cheap?

Damn, she's a lucky girl. That's a sweet Triumph, all else aside!

If you REALLY want to go all pink, you should start thinking about getting some stuff custom anodized. I think it would look classy with a pink stem, bars and seatpost with a white saddle and bar tape.

Ah Dad, I helped raise two foster daughters. If there is any adult woman in your girl's life that you can talk to in confidence ask her about the color. Appearance, and color, are more important in some girls and womens lives then many men appreciate. Her mom or some other lady could tell you the optimum color.

The weird thing about the 7-speed is that there's no direct gear! Everything I've read says it's less efficient than the 8-speed models as well. On the 8-speed, 5th gear is direct. I've got the "red band" Nexus 8-speed on my Kogswell, and it's pretty sweet.

I know all too well, I've made mistakes in the past, but in this case I feel pretty confident, since I asked her if she'd like a pink bike. Her answer was "yes, pink would be great, but the style of the bike is more important than the color" She loves fashion, but has grown to be somewhat pragmatic about bikes as well. She wants something she'll be comfortable riding, and I've ridden with her on enough different bicycles to have a pretty good idea about what she likes from a rider comfort standpoint.

I am starting to wonder about wether she'd dig a Brooks saddle. the Flyer S in honey comes to mind as something that would look very sweet on that bike. I think I'll try a clever ruse such as "hey Rhye do you like this bike seat?"

Incidentally it was a similar clever ruse that caused this frame to be pearlescent pink in the first place. My dad was a bike nut, and an autobody repairman when we were kids, and one christmas he surprised us with new Treks under the tree. Mine was Burgundy, and my Sis's was pearl pink. He figured out our favorite color by looking through bike catalogs with us and asking us what color we liked. Then painted them to suit. My dad still rides my old Trek (his legs are shorter than mine), but my Sis's is just sitting in the garage attic waiting the next generation.

Why not as part of the gift let her help you design a custom bike? Let her help with things like color choices, saddles and bar style.

there's always pink deep v's if you (or an LBS) build up your own wheels. chris king makes pink components, like headsets and hubs, but i don't know if you want to drop that kinda $$$ on this bike. i'm sure you can find pink grips or bar tape too. pink waterbottle is easy...

i've also seen pink pedals, bmx flats as well as crank bros, and pink cable housing.

i would just go to ebay into cycling and search "pink." don't have to buy there if you don't want but it lets you know a lot of what's out there

Here are two Nexus conversions I did to older bikes. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions or I can help.

For the wife 7 speed:

for me 8 speed "red band):

seems odd posting in FG/SS so I hope I don't irritate anyone.

That was already the plan. She may even come down to the bike coop with me to help put it together. This week we'll be going down there to build her up a winter bike from old beater parts since her MTB got stolen.

I don't really need any help figuring out what she would like, I'm just wondering what's available for pink components. Does anyone know wether those star grips come in pink?

Yep she's totally down for the SF treatment. I didn't even suggest it, but she wants pink wheels. Anybody know of any good deals on machined Deep Vs or Aeroheads?

Also I'll never find fenders to match. So Aluminum or Chromed are gonna be the way to go. Of course she likes the hammered Honjo ones kids got expensive tastes :P Anybody have ideas for nice looking, more affordable fenders?

selle italia made some great pink turbos. They pop up on ebay now and again. Pink oury grips are cool too. If you are going for clips and straps,- pink straps. Pink cables, etc. Pink king headset. Pink spoke nipples.

When I'm going for a color scheme. I just go to the cycling category on ebay and do a search for the color. It's a good place to start for ideas.

yeah... Chris king headsets and hubs are out. She's 12 she's not allowed to have better parts than her dad :P

Cable housings are a sure bet as long as I can find some that are a light pink, and not hot pink.

that reminds me of an ex who would talk in her sleep. usually weird, nonsense stuff or totally conversational things that made her sound awake. but the best thing was one night when she said "pink". i said "pnk what?" and then she said "pink pink pink pink pink pink pink pink pink" over and over for a couple of minutes.

well it's almost built. My daughters birthday was yesterday, so I'm a little behind. I still need some northroad style bars and some pedals (wish I could find some pink ones) to finish it. The paint turned out to be a mess, so I opted to powdercoat it, and I couldn't pass up stardust blue! It's not nearly as pink as it was originally supposed to be. It's much MUCH better!

Anyway, here it is as it stands now until I can get some bars.

You gotta see this color in full sunlight. aside from all the different colored flakes it's got a sort of a color shifting effect

Oh, and yum, nice bike. Reminds me of a light touring/rando bike.
