Classic & Vintage - 7 speed bar end shifters???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Do they/did they exist? I've looked on ebay, and googled, but can't find any, anywhere.
Also, do they fit all size ars. I'm assuming not, only drop bars, but I've seen them on moustache bars as well, which I assume are smaller than drops.
7-speed bar-end shifters of all types are pretty hard to find these days. They do pop up on ebay every now and then, and often command pretty exorbitant prices. If you want Suntour or Campy shifters (I don't know if Campagnolo even made 7-speed bar-ends), good luck. But if what you're looking for is a set of Shimano 7-speed bar-end shifters to match a 7-speed cassette or freewheel, I have good news for you! The spacing between Shimano 7 and 8-speed equipment is so close that you can use 8-speed bar-end shifters on your 7-speed cluster with absolutely zero problems. And unlike the 7-speed shifters, they are readily available as NEW equipment that you can order in from your friendly LBS or online. You will have an extra unusable "click" in the shifters at the very low end, but the derailer limit stop will prevent you from shifting to it (and sending your derailer right into your spokes!). These shifters often retail for around 60 bucks or less, so you won't break the bank - finding 7-speed shifters on ebay won't save you any money!
As for bar size, mustache and drop bars have the same external diameter. Shimano bar-ends are intended to work with a variety of internal diameters, to accommodate bars of different thicknesses, but MTB diameter bars will be too small to fit them.

I just set up a bike with 8 speed ultegra bar end shifters and a seven speed cassette and it shifts great. You can find instructions for alternate cable routing on this page:

Harris has the shifters, but I got mine on eBay for $30. I can't tell them from new.
The alternate cable routing makes it move the derailer a little bit more with each click. You may not find it necessary. I didn't.
Man. this is where I came in!
Just about a year ago a fellow BF C&V member set me up with the 7-speed index barcons on the Miyata 512.
Ask nicely and maybe someone will help out.

They did, as part of the tandem, and some of the mtb lines in the late 80's time frame. They were Syncro based, so they're more or less unusable.
Hey, thanks chaps. Much appreciated. You brightened my day.

I'm setting up a bike right now with those very same shifters except mine are not in that nice of a shape -- they come from a co-worker who races so they've been down a couple of times -- but they still work.
Shoot Everest a PM. Believe he has sone for trade right now.

I have a set of 7spd Shimano barend shifters I was about to put on eBay. If you are interested then you can make an offer via private communication. They are in quite exceptional condition.
Just use thumb shifters as bar end shifters. They will work and shift exactly the same as real bar end shifters except they clamp on the end of the bars instead of in the bars. I actually like them better sticking out the sides instead of being lined up with the bar. I can operate the shift levers with my palm instead of my arthritic fingers.
These selectable friction or 7-speed index thumb shifters came off a bike I pain $5 for at a thrift store. Here are photos of my setup.

A few months back I had been pestering the LBS owner if he'd look for old Suntour shifters (he's been here since the early 80's)
A few days later he handed me a decent used pair of the ratcheting bar-cons and this lovely set that he had pulled off a new bike and stored away.
He offered me both sets for 20. I told him he should ebay the indexers because they were worth that and more. I ended up offering to just ebay them for him and ended up getting 58 dollars for them.
We split the take and now he keeps a close eye out for good used parts for me.

hmm There were some offers and suggestions flying around... i wouldn't mind a set of 7 speed bar-end shifters but certainly don't want to steel any from the OP..

I rather suspect that using the alternate cable routing would hurt the shifting performance. That cable routing is intended to resolve Dura Ace compatibility issues, it isn't meant for anything else. I don't know if it actually works for other things, but it's not inconceivable that it does. I and everyone else that I've talked to who's done this don't seem to have made use of the alternate cable routing, and yet it seems to work fine for everyone. I wouldn't bother with it.
I'm in the UK, so I suspect any trade/sale of 7 speeds is more trouble than it's worth. Also, I might actually prefer 8 speeds, so that I have the flexibility to move up to 8 speed, should I get the urge or the oportunity, so, don;t worry about stealing them away from me.

Sending small things like that transatlantic only costs a couple of quid Gotte. I'm in the UK to, and I ebay a lot of stuff abroad, as well as trading things both ways with people from here, and having people over there send me cheap stuff from Nashbar. Don't write it off, if it's not a frame or wheels, and isn't so expensive as to need insurance, there's no reason not to trade, and these are the most helpful people you're gonna find.

Sheldon brown says it helps. That's good enough for me. Mine shifts so well without using the alternate routing that I don't want to mess with it. Maybe I'll try it when I need to replace the cable.
