I took out my seat post when I changed saddles and when looking at it I realized that it is a Shimano Post. Unsure of the model though. I also don't know if its steel or alloy. It appears to have rust on it though. What can/should I use to remove this rust/oxidation. Does the post have any value?

If you have a steel frame, there will usually be some rust on the seatpost. If it is just powdery stuff on the surface I would just wipe it off. You may have to take some steel wool to it.

If it is pitted, I would replace it.

If a magnet sticks to it, it is steel.

Remember to put a light coat of grease the post before reinstalling

I'll check. It may be cromoly as the frame is cromoly (Columbous SL)

If it is a Shimano post in an SL frame it is alloy. You almost never see a steel post in a bike over $200 that was built in the last twenty years. Except for BMX

So then how does one remove oxidation from an Alloy post.
