Hello all,
I just wanted to start posting mountain biking opportunities in the Bommer and Shady Canyon areas in the City of Irvine Open Space Preserve-South area on a regular basis.
Upcoming MTB opportunities are
Sat, Jan 27th Intermediate MTB Ride
Sat, Feb 10th Advanced MTB Ride
Tue, Feb 13th Advanced MTB Night Ride
Sat, Feb 24th Intermediate MTB Ride
All of the rides are free, but do require pre-registration and are Docent led.
Registration is very easy online at www.irvineranchlandreserve.org/activities/
For those of you who have not had the pleasure of experiencing rides or hikes in the City of Irvine Open Space Preserve- South (Bommer and Shady Canyon), it is an incredible area with fantastic views, spectacular coastal sage habitat, rock outcroppings, lots of local history, and trails that are in great shape due to the managed use.
We basically have four types of mountain bike rides in the area.
Beginner rides – which are part beginner clinic, and part ride
Intermediate rides
Advanced rides
Advanced night rides
With the exception of the Beginner ride/Beginner clinic; the other rides typically last 3-1/2 hours, and the main difference between the rides is the speed and the number of re-groupings. Intermediate rides are at a more casual pace with numerous re-groups, while the advanced rides are at a steadier pace with fewer stops.
Also with the exception of the Beginner ride/Beginner clinic; the other rides traverse much of the same terrain except with the intermediate rides we try to avoid the more advanced climbs. The advanced rides hit it all including some technical single-track, and often times add distance by using the adjacent areas (Laguna Coast/El Moro), for some nice long loops. On the advanced rides you can expect some nice grunt hill climbs up to 44% grade, and everything in-between; but well worth the effort once you get to the top.
We’re also discussing the addition of an occasional “Epic” ride that will encompass several areas and push the distance and time to around 35 miles and 7 to 8 hours.
Sorry to be so long-winded, but I wanted to get as much information into this first post as possible.
I look forward to meeting some of the BF riders on these rides in the future.
If anyone ever has any questions, feel free to contact me at amaywhort@irlrtrust.org or my office line at 714-508-4762.
