Does anyone know if either Win2000 Pro or Win XP Pro can do a level 1 RAID (mirror) via the OS?
I know NT4 Server could, using disk admin, but I don't know about 2k or XP.

Doh, google is your friend. I just found out I can do it on 2000, but I need to "upgrade" the volume to a "dynamic disk" first.
Now I just need to figure out if doing this will blow away all the info on the partition. Seems like it shouldn't, since that would be pretty useless, but this is M$ after all.
it can be done, via software, but you have to get the proper .dll's from NT and put them in winXP then set up the array

If you have the funds, a RAID controller card is a better option than the OS software RAID.

yeah, hardware RAID is the way to go. Problem with the software OS-basd RAID is you can't hot-swap a failed drive without rebooting and reconfiguring the array in disk-manager. Also I've heard reports that the backup drive in the Windows RAID-1 isn't bootable if the main drive fails (they're really not exact copies of each other, even though the data itself is replicated).
you cant hot swap an IDE drive period, sata yes, ide no
software RAID has the advantage of being able to do LVM with various sizes of drives much more effectively
its a tradeoff, there's no free lunch

SCSI has ben hot swapable for years and years. But I doubt the OP has SCSI.
ya, the sata tech kinda put scsi into the only buy it if you really have to have it category
