Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Top fixies under $500

In the market for a fixie, but not looking to spend much money. I have a Fuji road bike and a Trek MTB. I need to round out the stable with a fixed gear. What are your choices for the top 5 or so fixies for the money?

Edit: Oh, and by the way, I am really short so I need something 46cm or less!

It might not be bling bling NJS stuff, but a good conversion can be quite cheap. Definitley under $500 unless you splurge. Real track hub as well.

Some FUJI tracks were going around here for 500CAD out the door so, it might be possible.

I had been considering that for the last six months, but since I need an XS frame, it has been next to impossible to find a good used frame in my size for less than what I could buy a brand new complete bike. I am envious of all you normal sized people......

This is what I don't get. I just snagged a brand new Trek hybrid for like $379 to use for a snow beater. Some cheap non-wallyworld MTBs can be had for under $300. A fixie doesn't need DRs, cassette, double/triple chainrings, shifters, etc, not to mention that the frame can be simpler because it doesn't need all the braze-ons....yet you can't find a new fixie for under $500? WTF?

we are cross bordering on the pricing as well. that might be throwing us a bit too.
not getting a new trek anything for 375 up here

for just a few bucks over the five hundred mark.... the Schwinn Madison doesn't look half bad and I think you could throw a leg over an IRO. From photos the Schwinn looks like it has quite a nice frame.

I'm 5'1"/5'2" and it fits me perfectly.

Anyone forget the Redline 9-2-5? Someone in another forum just steered me that way, and my LBS has 'em for $450.

In fact, the guy I spoke with rides one exclusively after purchasing it last spring. Went from a Madone to that. Gotta give him some props for that :)

I have been eyeing the 43cm Fuji SE with the 650s. My Fuji road bike does have 700c tires and it fits me fine. It has a sloping top tube so I have "plenty" of standover height. It is a 44cm bike. I was fitted and am supposed to fit a 46cm as the ideal.

Okay, so I checked everything out. I really like the Redline, but they only go down to 52! Everything else goes down to 49, except the Fuji. It looks like I am back where I started. It sucks to be short. At least I am smart and good looking. ;)

Hey, nobody wants to spend much money. As with many things in life, when buying new fixies you get what you pay for.

For the average person, conversions are not fun, not easy, not cheap (if done right), and not quick to do. Save yourself some hassle, cash, and time by buying a used complete entry to mid level track/fixie specific (not conversion).

It's the "off season" now, so you should be able to find some good deals before the weather gets warm again.

For example: Here is an ad for a custom Landshark for $650. (http://fastermustache.org/node/1671). It's 6 months old, but it's an example of what can be found.

Also, if you can squeeze into a 49cm, that would open up your selection. I think that manufacturers start their adult lineups at 49cm. Otherwise you are looking at getting a junior track bike which might be rare. What sucks is that any junior riding a track bike is likely to be in some sort of league and the bike is likely not a cheap one.

there are several junior track bikes here (http://www.bike123.com/used_bikes/used_bikeslist.php) but i have no idea as to the price. the owner, larry, is a really nice guy but also really busy, if you have questions try and squeeze them all into one email and if he doesn't get back to you, try him again in a couple days.

If there's any source around for old ten-speed frames I'm sure you'll be able to find a 49...there's tons around here (and I think one in my garage, but it might be a 52). Conversions may cost more in the long run (as you upgrade this and that, and end up with a carbon fork and shyte on it, or just upgrade the frame), but immediately the cost will be a lot lower. Plus you can blow $400 on rims and $50 on the rest of it, rather than buying a $500 bike with $200 rims (which you may well end up replacing anyways). A lot of it will be easier, too, since older bikes are more likely to come with 165 cranks, etc.

There is however, much more space for something to go wrong, so if you're unlucky, you might want to consider that...

I appreciate the suggestions to go to a used bike....but again....I am short. We are talking 26" inseam. I cannot fit on a 49cm bike. Believe me...I tried. I did check out the bike123.com site. Nice site with a ton of bikes. I inquired about the Fuji.

I can get you a red Fuji Track SE for $375(complete) from discount at a LBS I'm friends with. its 43cm and takes 26" wheels.

I came across a Fuji Track for a little under $500 in a nearby town. The Giant Bowery seems to be right at $500 at both local shops that carry it. I'm not really too sure about the sizing on them though...I guess I'm lucky to fit just right on a L (56) frame, which seems to be what most bikes are.

I don't own a fixie (yet), but I've noticed an interesting trend. In August/September when I called all of the closest shops and a few in towns about 30 miles away, none had ANY fixed gears, a few had no idea what I was talking about and an employee of one shop offered to bring his in. Now most of them have at least one from whatever their main brand is, one shop has 3 or 4 different brands, not sure if they are actually selling though, since I've never seen anybody riding them around here. If I get one, I would probably go for an entry-level new complete. I'm too lazy to put all of the effort into hunting down everything I would need to assemble one myself. I don't have any spare stuff I could put on it, and decent old road frames are hard to come by around here, especially for a decent price.

Ive seen Bianchi Pistas onsale for under $500.

IRO Mia (http://irocycle.com/iro/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=10) comes in a 16" frame. It has track dropouts and could be made fixed with a surly hub. Frame and fork is 280 I think. MTB parts are pretty cheap, could be done for under $500.

The Pista might be a tad too big for you. Like I said, I'm 5'1"/5'2" and it was just a little big for me.

You can get a Giant bowery in a xs, I have one and love it bunches..............
