Touring - Sugino XD600 9 speed?

I'm trying to order an xd600 crankset and looking for the 165mm. Looking at Aebike's site, they list the 170mm and 175mm as 8speed...but don't mention anything on the 165mm crank. Is the 165mm 9 speed compatable? Here's the link: (that's a damn good price btw)

I went over to jensonusa and they spec the xd600 as 6-7-8 spd compatible, not 9-speed. Read about it here (http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/CR408A05-Sugino+Xd600+Triple+Cranksets.aspx).

Man that's a setback. I have everything else already including dura ace 9speed shifters, 9speed cassette, etc. I really liked that crank too

edit...but again, there's no mention of compatability on the 165mm ...look closely

I use a 170mm XD600 with 9 speed stuff, and it works fine. I'm shifting 105 FD, RD with barcons.

I talked to the girl at AE and she said the dealer book listed all of the suginos as 6, 7,8, or 9 speed compatable. That's good to know.

Does that 105 FD happen to be 28.6mm? If so , where'd you get it?

I _think_ it's a 28.6 clamp dia. I got it from Rivendell when I purchased the bicycle.

I have the XD600 on my LHT with 9-speed cassette. No problems at all. The triple crank will work fine with 9-speeds.

That's pretty clear. I was starting to wonder if all the guys running suginos were running 8speed....that sure would make it tough to find 8 speed parts. Thanks for the replies

Spicer had every XD crank I could imagine a month or two ago, listed at least. Now there isn't so much. But he had all the sizes sold without any rings, sold all the tandem stuff, so you might drop him a line if you can't find what you want.

I use the XD600 with 10-speed cassettes and chains. No problem.

XD, XD600 and XD 300 all are 9-speed compatible. All that is different is the label and the metals used on the largest and middle chainrings, aluminum alloy on the higher-priced ones and steel on the lower-priced ones.

For the long haul tourist, the steel chainrings might be a wiser choice as far as wear is concerned. Weight aside, steel is alomost always better than any aluminum for alot of good reasons. I run a XD600 with 8 speed but it works with 9 speed no problem. Rivendell sells these for 9 speed setups everyday.

I'm told that rear derailers do once you're talking about 9-speed chain with a 6-speed derailer, but I'm not buying it. Still, it's controversial, so I'll let it be. But cranks are a non-issue. Your chain should match your rear cluster, as should your rear shifter. Other than that, "#-speed" is nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

That's what I figured....but since all of sugino's websites state "for 6, 7, and 8 speed drivetrains", I had to ask. I went with a sram 11-34, sram chain, lx front and rear der, XD600, and un73 BB (68 x 115)
