Here is some links to a program to help residents Of Santa Cruz CA to use folding bikes along with other forms of transit. You really save some $$$ with this program, not just hot air. A rare thing indeed in the USA.

The disclaimer FF didn't mention: For those who can afford to live in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz? Who can afford anywhere worth living in the State of California.
The question is: how do you think you have to live?... If you want a huge house and a huge yard, you are correct, good luck. you either can't afford it or you are going to have to drive 3 hours both ways to have it.
But if you are more interested in what California has to offer as a place, climate, experience, and are willing to live more modestly, then most anyone can afford it. It's all about the choices you make.
I gladly choose living on my sailboat in downtown Long Beach over my 2500 sqare foot house on 4.5 acres in Indiana, any day.
I'll be out riding my folding bicycle this weekend in the sun while my friends and family in Indiana are stuck in the house, hiding from the cold and snow.
Where do you live, Brian?
