Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Crackling sound before flat tire

:( This is the second flat I've had in two days. The first time I pulled a nice piece of glass out of the tire, as well as the tube. Just earlier, the same thing happened, however there was this incredible crackling sound like fire works before it went flat. I pulled some tiny glass bits off the tire, but was under the impression that it takes more than some glass dust to flatten a tube. I'm assuming this is due to my ****ty tires, however, could the crackling sound have anything to do with a pinched/impropperly installed tube?

Anyone recomend a good tire that doesnt get cut easily?

Specialized Armadillos are tough, but some people don't like the ride quality. Same goes for the Soma Everwears.

My favorite tire for a balance of good ride, toughness and ease of mounting are the wire bead Serfas Seca tires. $20 each and they last well and ride well.

The crackling sound could have been your tire crushing the glass, though I don't think it would be as loud as fireworks.

My favorite tires are Gatorskins. They're tough as hell, but still have really good traction (even in the rain); I've ridden over all kinds of **** without any flats.

me likey somas and vrederstein ricorso but they are hard to mount nd high pressure

as for the crackle noise could have been glass still in the tire casing and also if your tires aren't inflated to a suitable pressure you winn get more flats anway hp tire + punccture = your noise

I have had the crackling sound before, it was when I was inflating a pinched tube and it made an awful crackling sound right before it blew up in my face. My theory is a pinch.

i hated these tires. i had punctures or slow leaks at least once a week on these things.

if you have time to pick glass out of your squishy soft tire after every ride, buy serfas.

word. what he said plus hold up to excessive skidding/skipping. any NYC people who have ridden with me will attest. no flats since I switched either, and I regularly ride through glass on the ground. got mine for $24 a piece shipped on probikekit a couple weeks back.

You may have improperly seated the tire bead and caused the tube to pinch. If I hear crackling when I inflate my tires, I bleed off the pressure and work the tire in by hand on all sides to make sure the bead is seated properly and the tube is not pinched. Also check that your rim tape is seated properly.

I had this (combined with a wheel out of round) contribute to a series of flats.

for tires, i used to swear by bontrager racelite hardcase in front, armadillo in back.

now, it's a vittoria randoneur in back. the thing is heavier, but not so much it matters (unless you're racing or something) and the damn thing is freakin' indestructible. working as a courier, i used to change armadillos every paycheck. i just got my 4th or 5th since i got these tires, and i'm just now thinking "hey, i should change it. maybe...i think it's still got some life in it". thing'll last forever. great ****ing traction, too. great for stopping on a fixed gear.

Generous application of babypowder on the tube and inside the tire helps smooth things out also.
