Winter Cycling - Snow covered roads are like Pizza.

This thought occured to me today. Snow covered roads are a lot like Pizza. They are an absolute blast right after they are delivered and even a couple days later can be a lot of fun. But week old pizza and week old snow....not so much.

After many freeze thaw cycles the roads can get pretty nasty. I prefer new pizza, and I prefer new snow.

True. This morning's commute sucked, the ride back was even worse. I like when there's ice and a little thin layer that crunches under my weight. This afternoon, it was a mess of road grime, ice boulders, weaving tracks, and frozen stuff that would stay firm under me one second and collapse a few feet later, engulfing my tires in a sand-trap-esque mess.

*shakes fist at nature*

Pizzaaaaaa! yea!

It's all good :D


BTW, to me, the best Pizza, is Free Pizza!

I'm eating pizza that hasn't been fresh since October 2006. They just keep spreading more cheese on it!

I wish they wouldn't clean up the pizza so quick. I'd much rather have a snow covered road that one that is wet, icy and slushy near the edges and full of salt and whatever that other crap is they are treating them with nowadays. Gimme snow or gimme dry - the inbetween sucks.

Pizza is best when they rub olive oil on the curbs.

No, I have no idea what that means either, but I could go for a Villa Rosa special right about now. Too bad they're a thousand miles away. :'(

The analogy only works if the snow is a week old. A better analogy would be that snow is like turkey. Excellent fresh out of the oven. Good a day later. Okay the next week. Two weeks later: "Turkey again?" Three weeks later: "Haven't we finished that yet?" Four weeks later: "Give me the damned turkey I gonna bury it!" Five weeks later: "You stupid #$^&((@#@ dog! Why'd you dig that up? And why are we having turkey soup again?!:mad: :mad: :mad: "

Five weeks. Five storms. My street is 12" higher than my sidewalk. I can ride over curbs without hopping them because there are no curbs...just ice sheets that run from one side of the street to the other. There is not a single bare patch of ground from Cheyenne, WY to Trinidad, CO! Everything is just white. White. White. White. Please stop snowing:cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:

At least you can ride. I can't afford a MTB due to my heating bill.
A road bike does not work in this crap. ugh
I can't wait for the melt to start and finish. Give me a day or two and I should be able to make it from my home to union station. I was able to make it last week. Then it snowed....again!

My streets right now are like mutiple compound frozen ruts, snow that has been compressed to ice and grit... I still enjoy it :)

A person just has to be light on the saddle and sharp with the balance :)

If it was just ice and grit, I'd be happy. But I have 2 miles of bad road to get to ice and grit...and I live in the inner city! Our ruts are of the 12" deep variety made of polished ice. Heck, I have to use 4-wheel drive most mornings just to get to the clear roads. We haven't seen a plow on our road for 18 years! (I'll take that back. We had a jeep with a plow blade down our street on New Year's Eve [storm #2].)

I can appreciate what you are going through. My commute is not bad, but there are sections there of 1 foot deep ruts as well, however not like others have to face in other parts of the city.

The ride home was fun, and on the edge. Temperature was about -7C, so the road was a mix of hardpack and soft mushed snow. Sections of the ruts would crumble away as I rode home. The front wheel would head off in one direction as the back followed in the previous path. Lots of sideways drift steering, and upper body movement to maintain control :lol:

It was still fun!
