My department recently investigated a hit and run accident involving a teenage bicyclist riding on a bike path who was struck while crossing a roadway. The driver stopped initially, but then got back in his vehicle and left the scene. The cyclist did have some pretty significant leg injuries from the incident. Information was disseminated to all Deputies in the area and several days later the suspect vehicle and suspect was located and the Deputies got a full confession out of the driver.

See, we do care :)

Here is the article from the Holland Sentinel:

A 47-year-old Holland Township man confessed Friday to sheriff's deputies to a hit-and-run incident that occurred Jan. 14, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

Sgt. Steve Austin said the sheriff's office located the vehicle and individual involved in the hit-and-run incident. The man's name will be released after he is charged, Austin said.

The report will be forwarded to the Ottawa County Prosecutor's office on charges of leaving the scene of an injury crash and driving without insurance.

A Holland Township teenager was on a bike path crossing James Street when a vehicle turning south onto 136th Avenue from James struck him, Austin said.

After hitting the bicyclist, the individual stopped, but continued south on 136th Avenue.

The bicyclist was hospitalized with leg injuries.

That's nice to hear, DJ. Right now, our local police are in the doghouse with the local bike community over a couple (http://bikeportland.org/2007/01/19/details-emerge-from-nopo-cyclist-attack/) of recent incidents (http://bikeportland.org/2007/01/19/no-sympathy-for-cyclist-struck-on-swan-island/). For us, I think it just totally depends on which officer respond to an incident. Since I detest both gambling and russian roulette, you can imagine how well that sits with me.

It seems like when it becomes a hit-and-run, it is taken to another level entirely.

Good job with your guys, Deputy Jones, solving a good hit and run always makes our job feel a little better.

That's because the article said Steve Austin works for your department. Bet he pulled the guys car handle right off his door before he jumped over the guys house and scared the crap out of him with those wierd bionic sound effects he has. :)

Hope you publicize that article well enough that word gets out to the drivers around there. Hit and run just disgusts me. Have people completely lost their sense of common decency?

No, it hides behind their much larger cowardice.

Hey deputyjones, I had an experience today. I was riding my bike and some guy was pulled over in the bike lane getting a ticket from a motorcycle cop. I couldn't really tell if the cop was still writing the ticket or if he was done so I went to pass the guy who was pulled over. Right then he pulls out and almost runs me over. The cop just shrugs his shoulders and says, "What can you do? It's a dangerous road." I didn't blame him or even the guy who pulled out. I figure if it was me I'd be all flustered and make a mistake, too. Anyway, I thought it was nice the cop at least saw it happen and commiserated with me, even if he didn't do anything about it.

No point here at all. Carry on.
