I'll be taking off for a ride from Boomer's Irvine (Michelson/Harvard) early this afternoon. I'd like to get some climbing in. I'm not familiar with the area at all so I thought I'd ask you guys for some input!

I have a couple of hours to ride. Would the Strawberry Hills Golf Course/Turtle Rock area be a good choice? Then wind my way over to Newport Coast via Shady Canyon Drive?

Is Culver for the ride back to the starting point a safe option?

Would appreciate any tips you can hand over to me. Thanks! :D

Ok, so I want the actual Turtle Rock Drive that can be accessed from Ridgeline, right?

Neccros

yeah... I used to start from Ridgeline then climb up and loop around on Turtle Rock Dr then come down Campus past University HS, then I would head towards Back Bay or up Culver back home

I've been lazy all week. :o Time to get my butt out there at least for a few miles! I plan to get in as much as I can before I have to be back to Boomer's by 3.

Something like this?

- Hop on the bike path from Boomers towards University
- Get off bike path onto University
- University to Ridgeline
- Rt on Ridgeline, climb all the way to the top (past Turtle Rock)
- Turn around at the top of Ridgeline, descend down to Turtle Rock
- Rt at Turtle Rock
- Ride the Turtle Rock loop
- Back to Ridgeline (climb Ridgeline if you want additional climbing)
- Continue on Turtle Rock
- Lt Sunnyhill
- Rt Shady Cyn
- Lt Bonita Cyn
- Lt Newport Coast
- Lt Ridge Park
- Rt Vista Ridge
- Rt Newport Coast
- Lt San Joaquin
- Descend all the way down to Back bay (past Jamboree)
- Rt Back Bay bike path
- Take the bike path all the way back to Boomers

What time are you heading out? I'll probably riding that way later today.

Another fun climb in that area is taking Turtle Ridge (from either Newport Coast Dr or Bonita Canyon) and then going up Summit Park Drive. Summit Park goes through a gated community, but I've never been denied. It will spit you out on Shady Canyon, where you head over to Ridgleine or do the Shady Canyon bike path.

Thanks Tak! I need to have my son at Boomer's by noon. Once I get him settled in, I'll take off shortly after that. My tentative plan is very similar to what you suggested...

I was going to take Culver to University, but I'd prefer a bike path. Is it easily accessible/visible from the Boomer's area?
Then, from San Joaquin I was going to turn on Spyglass, circle around to San Miguel to Bonita Canyon.

Pat, I was planning Turtle Ridge to NC, then Ridge Park/Spyglass, etc. Sounds like I'll have to hit Summit Park next time! Thanks for the suggestions!! :D

Now, let's hope I can complete this and get back to Boomer's on time! :p

I can join you for part of the ride...I can meet you at Boomer's parking lot. I'll PM you my cell #.

You want to avoid Culver between Shady Cyn and Campus -- big construction work, no room for riders.

The entrance to the bike path from Boomer's is right next to the parking lot. Getting off from the bike path to University is a bit tricky, but look for a church on your left.

skinny white kids in a gang called "The M&M's"?

I ran into Tak (probably as he was riding up to meet you), but I had my headphones on and was heading out for my impressive 17 mile BB loop...

Hi,

Hey, I'm in Long Beach!!!

Had a good ride with a few of my clubmates. Went south to the Stop 'N Go in Laguna and the did Newport Coast on the way back. Did a couple of extra miles in the hood to make it an even 100K. :) That plus yesterday's 45 miles put me over 100 miles for the weekend -- which was my goal. Gotta make up for lost miles while I was sick.

Might have been the last miles on my 2002 Look KG381i. But that's another story.

I hit Back Bay around 3 and did a few laps.... I'm getting mad because my feet got sore 3 miles into the ride... this is the demon I'm battling and thats why you don't see me on group rides.... :(

That sucks Neccros (I'm sorry, I've forgotten your name! :o). Not the same, but I had saddle issues FOREVER, so I know how you feel...

Its Brian... :) what sucks is my body wants to ride 50-100 miles but my feet get irritated the more I pedal so it becomes unbearable after a while... when I was using my mountain shoes and pedals, I'd get sore about 15-20 miles in and after dropping almost $350 for road shoes and pedals, the problems seems to still be there and rears its ugly head even sooner... I have natural "duck feet" and it never affected me when I used to ride road years ago but I pray this isn't the main reason for my feet problems now... Oh well :(
