Call a few physical therapy places and get their views.

D'oh! I'm such an idiot! Ten years ago or so, a fellow named Pete Egoscue literally saved me from back surgery when doctors, chiropractors, you name it could do nothing. Check out his website if you're interested by clicking HERE (http://www.egoscue.com/htdocs/index.asp). He was just starting then, now he has clinics all over the darn place.

Anyway, your post jingled a memory that I had some unused prepaid time with the clinic when my back problem disappeared. I called them a few moments ago, they verified three more appointments, and booked me for a look-see on Thursday.

Why didn't I think of them before? Probably because it was "just" a knee problem, and the back stuff hadn't started. I'm jazzed... :D

YA, take spry's suggestion---only if you want to be a CRIPPLE for the rest of your life. At the over 50 stage in life it pays to sit back and take a hard look at things.
You really don,t believe a physician in this country would do that to a 50+patient?
All kidding aside,I believe in Glucosamine for connective tissue issues.I think Americans are over medicated with prescription drugs.Just observe the tv ads. They are trying to make Cealis a recreational drug for middle age people.

I'm on my way to the drugstore to buy a knee brace. I'll take it easy for a few days, I guess. It only hurts when I try to walk or move the leg. When it's at rest, I'm fine. Guess I'll give it some rest!

Been having knee pain in exact area you describe for some time now - almost a year. Started before I got back into biking last spring. Had an MRI done and the doc said it's tendonitis and a little arthritis, take Motrin and exercise the knee. Exercising makes it worse. Motrin does okay. I started wearing a knee brace but still had pain. I stopped by a friend's house one afternoon on my bike and was telling him about my knee. His wife says here try this and gives me a new product on the market called ActiveOn. It's made by the makers of the product called Head On. You probably seen their annoying commercials. Anyway, I roll some of this stuff on my knee and by time I get home the pain is gone. I've been using it now for about three weeks and the knee is the best it's been in almost a year. I can now walk up stairs without pain, bike without pain. the knee is getting stronger by the day. I don't have to wear the knee brace either since I started using this stuff. They make a couple different varities. I use the one that says for arthritis. It only cost $9.95 at Walgreens. Try it it works.

Have to admit that I harbor fears about some injury popping up to halt my foray into cycling. I've been needing to get more exercise for years and it would be very depressing if shortly after I ramp things up, to be stopped in my tracks due to an injury.

If I was experiencing DG's symptoms, I would be quite anxious about the situation. Some aches and pains come with the territory. Fortunately most problems just need some rest and/or treatment and you're back in the saddle in short order.

You've got to be careful with self-diagnosis on knee problems. Even selecting the wrong type of knee brace can aggravate the problem.

The fave is usually the wrong saddle height, which I assume you know about... but another common cause is bent peddal spindles, it may seem daft but it is true, it does put undue pressure on the legs, and it is the knees that feel it.

I've been trying this stuff, thanks to your recommendation. So far, the jury's out. It seems to help so I will keep trying it. Also seems to help my stiff back a little. Thanks!

Being that Big Paulie has appointed himself your personal trainer at a reduced rate of only $50 a week, why did you refrain from asking him on knee therapy?

Because the whole idea scared the stuffing out of me!

I been using it on my back also. My knee still feels great. I haven't had to use the stuff on my knee for two days now.
