I recently got in a discussion with somebody else about this. When I get gift certificates, they tend to be for place that honestly, I don't have any need to shop at. So, I can always use the cash. As a result, I put all my gift certificates on ebay and always seem to get +/- $1 of the nominal value. Is this wrong?

no.

No, because you still put the money from the card to use. Even tho the money isn't spent the way the giver intended it to be, it's still better because you then buy what you actually wanted.

That's how I look at it. I write thankyou notes and say "Your contribution will be put to good use". :D

exactly. If the person gets upset, tell him/her the truth that you do not even shop there.

I've been known to sell or return presents. Same deal only you get shafted because you can't return it.

I don't sell presents. Well, I think I would if I waited about a year from the time I got them

Selling a gift certificate is one thing. But if someone puts thought into a gift and you sell it, at least to me that's not right. If I knew someone went and sold something I gave them, I'd probably never give them a gift again.

That's what I do, about. If I don't use it within a year, I obviously don't need it. If I know I won't use it then I try to return it.

Pheard, if you were in college and still getting pink diaries from your relatives for Christmas you'd be passing it on too. Keep in mind that I own NOTHING pink and am more likely to have my hands on a carburetor than a card. Attempts to change that are not appreciated.

I think what I really need is some heated grips. ;) Warm carbs beat anything pink any day of the week though.

Talking dirty about bikes is so much fun. :D

Is it wrong to sell other peoples' kidneys?

Nah, not wrong at all explody. I mean, I bet the person you got them from is DYING to buy them back!

Oh, crap. I never really thought about selling them back to the person I harvested them from. Talk about an immediate customer base. And if I play my cards right, I can even start charging people to not remove their kidneys in the first place. I'm gonna be RICH!

Where have you been, sister? Are you forgetting Pheard likes pink? He has pink bar tape and is going to wear pink tights on our next ride together. Plus he's been eyeballing Taerom's new pink Walmart shirt. Or maybe it was Taerom...............

But anywho..........

Most places in Cali will let you cash them in. That's what I do.

Gift cards or kidneys?

Are they worth more cash if they're from a famous person?

I don't understand gift cards. Cash is a "gift card" that will work at any store. Why would you trade a universal currency in for a store specific currency that has a number of provisos and limitations set on it (and at a 1 to 1 trade)? Gift cards lack both sentiment and utility as a gift, in my book, so I would feel free to make use of them in any way you see fit.

It's yours to do with what you want. I always hate when folks don't ask where I shop and get me the right gift certificate.

Some think GC's are wrong to give since there is no thought process in it. I however like them if for a place I shop.

Let's be honest.................do you really want that ugly pull over sweater or the plastic with a money amount to get what you want?!

Seriously, no respect for pink. That's wrong.

Who said I was wearing pink tights? I never said that.

Nothing wrong with selling them. I do it all the time. My sister in law and mother keep sending my wife and I gift certificates for places they know we don't shop. Or the best was the one we got this year for xmas from a little boutique shop in a city 400 km from where we live.

Didn't you ask this same thing last year?
