Looking for suggestions for a used road style "beater" bike to ride when conditions aren't the best (rain, muddy/dirty, etc). I'm taking all suggestions. Any advice on where to look for used bikes would be appreciated. I live 30-45 minutes north of Atlanta, GA.

Definitely want a steel frame
Minimum Tiagra (could live with sora if I had to)
Prefer triple, but could live with double chain ring

Being relatively new to road biking, I'm not sure who all makes steel road bikes.

Thanks In Advance

You did not say how much you want to spend.

Go to ebay and type in COLNAGO, CINELLI, MERCKX, DE ROSA for starters. You can sometimes find some older steel bikes cheap that are awesome to ride. It should at least give you an idea of the prices.

As far as price is concerned, as little as possible. I just forked out $1500 on a new bike, so it would have to be a deal. I would hope to keep it under $300 at the very most. Thanks for the suggestions.

For $300 you might want to type in TREK, CANNONDALE or RALIEGH.

Go to your LBS and check their board. Sometimes people post to sell their old bikes when they buy a new one.

Good luck!!

Ebay is your best bet. YOu'll be very hard pressed to find a new roadie bike for $300. Entry level mountain bikes, (which dominate the entry level $200 price point), are just that: entry level and mountain bikes. You're looking at used if you want a road bike. An entry level mountain bike would meet your budget, though.

There are always year end sales, too.

I was actually going to suggest that you just take your old bike and make it into a beater until I saw that you don't have an old bike.

Take a look at these guys...they have several $500 bikes, no sales tax and free shipping if not living in Nevada.

I just sold a Bianchi for $50. It was an excellent beater. I'm not even dreaming of taking my new Bianchi out in the rain. I guess before its over I'll have to get another beater as well. - Ted

You might just consider an entry-level mtn bike with 1" slicks. They are nearly as fast as a road bike, and are built to stand the more difficult situations. At least, that is my 2nd bike. Works out well, and in your price range.

I'll let my cannondale hybrid go for $375.

Cyclo-cross bikes or light touring models are good. Bianchi, Jamis, Fuji make good value models.

Cross bike is a great choice, I have a Lemond and I love it as my second bike.

If you have Dick's Sporting Goods stores in your area, I've seen Mongoose Marzini (sp?) road bikes with Sora there for $399.

My thoughts exactly. Older bikes are da bomb.
