Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - I did some math and now I'm confused.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ok, I went and bought some Mr. Tuffy's and put them in one of my tires.

Here's my thinking: Cheap tire + Mr. Tuffy weighs less than expensive tire with mega kevlar flat protection.

I like the cheap tires, they ride nice and are pretty grippy.

BTW, cheap tire is 28mm Bontrager Select B, and expensive tire is Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase.

That's not normally the case at all. There must be something funny going on here.

Yep, you saved about 10 bucks. Er, wait, this is about weight? I dunno then but I think you mucked something up.

Your problem is they are bontrager tyres. And what he said /\

Continental GP 4 seasons NEVER puncture and never wear. 12,000km on one set and counting.

I find this extremely hard to believe.

Initial cost might be cheaper, but I'm willing to bet the total cost per kilometer is a lot higher with cheap tires as they wear much faster.

I use the Slime brand liners. Have not flatted since installing them. Before I would flat frequently because I was running cheap Conti Sport 1000's (27's, no kevlar). Don't let the haters discourage you - They do work. Weight penalty, sure. But I don't carry extra tubes with me now, just a patch kit and pump in case of a pinch flat.

I'll take that bet. Of course there may be super crappy cheapo tyres that fall apart in a week, but otherwise:

-Expensive tyres tend to be a bit more "racey": light and grippy, which translates to less thick tread (probably) and softer, faster wearing compound (certainly)

-You buy tyre liners once. You can buy the cheaper, non-protected version of the same tyre and switch over the liner when it wears out so you spare a bunch of money.

I've got several thousand km on my Schawlbe Marathon Plus tires as well does my wife. The tread is still wonderful. My buddy who is a cheapskate ALWAYS complains that he gets less than 1000 km from his tires. The Schawlbe's are twice as expensive as the cheap ones.

Your buddy should stop locking his wheels then. There are n factors involved in tyre wear and such a tiny sample gives no information.

i sometimes try and convince myself i don't need kevlar tires, when nycbikes had their big wharehouse sale i bought a bontrager Select B which rode nicely but without fail i had 2 puncture flats within a thousand miles so i switched back to kevlar and have not flatted since additionally i've been running vittoria rubino pros(II now) up front for years and have had good results

My thinking is that I tend to wear out back tires pretty fast, especially gatorskins (the only expensive tire I really like). I used Michelin Dynamics for a while, and liked them pretty much, except for the flats.

If I got Mr. Tuffy's, I could run a tire like Serfas Secas ($20) or the Dynamics (even less) and not stress about getting a new tire every other month.
