So some of you know that I've been dealing with a gimpy left shoulder since the middle of the summer. (my lower back has been achy lately but that's more acute than cronic) I thought the shoulder problem was an old hockey injury and the shoulder was finally giving up on me. I went to the doctor recently and he prescribed some meds for it.

Now last night, I'm watching the game at a friend's house and the shoulder is achy. So I start rubbing it and on top where my trap muscles meet my shoulder I feel what I think is a knot in the muscle(s). I notice I don't have that on the other shoulder. So I use a little effort and rub the knot until it goes away. It did hurt a little bit, but guess what??? I can move my shoulder through the entire range now with no pain or inpingment! Woo Whooo:)

But here's the rub..... I wake up this morning and I've got this jumbo egg sized lump on top off my shoulder where the knot was. No pain..just a big *ss lump. My coworkers think I had a cyst and rubbed it hard enough to break it up. The shoulder still feels good, but I'm not sure what to do about the lump thingie.

Go see the doctor. If it is a cyst, one little shot of a steroid, and it will just be a memory. It isn't even painful.

O.K. So the doctor's office had a 2 pm appointment which I'm taking. The lump makes my trap/shoulder area look pretty bizarre! On one hand..I'm glad the shoulder pain is gone...on the other...I don't want to walk around with a big lump on my shoulder looking like quazzimoto!

If you could move the lump from side to side, that would be kewl.

Hope it's just a fluid-filled cyst. That can be aspirated. Let us know how it goes, mmkay?

Stick it with a dirty sewing needle and drain it.

Meh. Real men remove their cysts with a rusty spoon and a broken utility knife. Slice and scoop, baby!

If you sharpen the spoon, you can save a step, and just scoop.

but why a spoon, cousin?

I gave myself three stiches once with no novacaine to numb my arm. It hurt so bad my ears watered up. That was back in my Marine days. Out in the field, corpsman was busy with a buy who had multiple compound fractures off his leg. So I got a suture kit and a "good luck."

I can take a lot of pain...I just don't want this lump on my shoulder. A coworker said that my body might disolve it on its own, but I'm going to the doctor anyway this afternoon.

My guess is that they'll image it first, either using U/S or MRI. Just to rule out anything nefarious.

Ok, with those two bases covered, my money's on a biopsy before any actions are taken.

My quess is that it is a parasitic twin, there since birth, but finally burrowing it's way to the surface. It's saliva is a pain killer, hence the lack of pain as it chews it's way to freedom. Either that or a ganglion cyst.

O.K. Doctor says he believes that I had a cyst on the end of the collar bone where it meets the shoulder. I rubbbed it and broke the cyst. The swelling is from the fluid that was inside the cyst. I am already scheduled for a full shoulder x ray later this week and he already has me on Anti-Inflamitory meds. He says heat pad two to three times a day and my body should dissolve the fluid on its oen over the next 7 to 10 days. At least it's not painfull. Hey...the sharp pain(s) in my shoulder are 99% gone since the thing broke, so that's a plus.

X-ray. Sounds like he wants to check out bones in your shoulder, since x-ray is not the ideal imaging for soft tissues. This is good, to rule out bone involvement.

Sounds like you'll be back to riding with your usual lumbar pain in no time, cycle17! Congrats! :)

Now maybe I can get back to a full exercise schedule by the end of the week. I've made some strides in my diet now that the holidays are behind us.:D
