Actually it was a studly work over - cause it was all over for me. I finally got a chance to try out the 700c x 35 studded snow tires. I just rode the 1 mile loop around my house. One side is reasonably flat - along our community MUP. Two sides are reasonably stiff hills, the third is a steep hill (down in my direction).
The tires performed as well as expected. On the uphill with packed down almost ice they held enough traction in 1st and 2nd gear to allow me to climb. For braking they gripped enough to slow me down and skidded in a well behaved manner.
In my area, the conditions are always poor - borderline freezing. On the MUP you have trampled / dimpled snow/ice that bounces the front around, requiring a lot of balancing. On unplowed streets you have mixtures of pack ice and looser slush that destabilizes the bike and saps the momentum. That's where he workout comes from - 1 mile equals 5+ miles on dry pavement w/studded tires. It doesn't look like this 50+ engine is up to a 9 mile one-way commute.
