Went out Friday night after work and cranked out 11 good, hard miles. Pretty much if it was level, I wasn't interested. Still had enough to head out for a another 20 miles on Saturday morning. Ahhhh but the best laid plans... I made the mistake of adjusting my seat to tilt the nose down a bit. Checked it all out and it *seemed* like everything was in order but about 1.5 miles into the ride I hit a pretty hard bump and the back of the saddle shot down and -of course- the nose came up fast into my naughty bits. Yikes. So, off the bike I get and break out the tools to get things all adjusted and tightend down again. Came loose again. I'm finding that saddles are tricky little beasts. So, I repeat the process but now the nose is too low and I feel like I'm pitching forward too much. Well, I've already lost too much time and I figure I'll just grin and bear it until I get to my usual stopping point to deal with it. But then I noticed that my front derailleur wasn't dropping the chain down onto my small chainring. I tried a couple of tweaks but no go... I really need that gear to get home so I had to stop and yank out the tools again, this time to loosen up the cable and reset my front derailleur (and readjust my saddle to get the nose up again). Got the cable pretty squared away but the saddle jolted free again. Man! It always feels tight... how do you know when your saddle REALLY is locked down? At any rate, I was on a bit of a wife-imposed time limit and there went my 20 mile aspirations; it was time to head back home. I was late as it was. Finally, everything seemed to be in order though the chain was rubbing on the cage in low. Pulled over AGAIN and tweaked the Low set screw a little and made the last 2 miles without incident.yay. All in all 16.5 miles and the satisfaction of knowing I can do the old emergency road side repair thing. Tonight I'll find out if it's all still working. I will need to take some time this weekend maybe to do a *real* front deralleur adjustment, though. Pshew!

Best laid plans- as they say. Last Saturday I had intended to service the MTB as it had caused a couple of problems the previous week. Then we had a storm last week and I had to replace a couple of fence posts. Sunday morning and no maintenance except for oil the chain. I was lucky in that nothing went wrong, but I have to service the thing this week before it lets me down.

Whiner!;)

But in reality one of the beauties of the bike is that one CAN work on it on the side of the road, and then carry on isn't it?

Yep. Just pull over and, with a minimum amount of tools and fuss, you're on your way.
You can at least get things set so you can limp home, anyway.
Unless, like some poor fellows I've read about here, youi break your saddle or some or major component.
They're pretty simple devices, really, these bikes of ours.
