Foo - Tips to stay unsick.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
There's someone in my house who's very sick. Sitting there sneezing into the air, blowing his nose, and being as disgusting as he possibly can.
I may or may not be riding this wednesday, but either way I really don't want to get sick.
Right now, my 2 thoughts are I can suck on vitamin c tablets, and wash my hands constantly. But can't I breath in germs? Suggestions please. One's that don't include crystalized ginger.

Zinc, chromium, Airborne? There's always some magical elixir that's popular at the moment. I haven't been sick in 10-years and I attribute that to attitude and being in shape ("I don't believe in germs, go away"). Then again, coming from a 3rd-world country, I've had every childhood illness possible, so I've got a hefty immune system.
I say stay far away from the nose-farter..
Ok. That's what I was thinking too. I'll cover my face while walking by and stay farrr away.

As you stated in first post.... WASH YOUR HANDS. A lot. Not like OCD washing, but keep them clean with thorough soap and water scrubings. And keep your hands out of your nose and mouth.
As for remedy-of-the-moment.... ZICAM. It may be placebo and hype, but I mentally think I'm getting over a colder faster when I start taking that stuff at the first sign of a cold.

The few times I was sick as a caregiver, and whenever anyone visited who was "questionable," I used Nexcare All Purpose masks. They're not cheap, but it was worth it to avoid having my husband get a head or chest cold, which could have required hospitalization. My step-son's wife is a pediatrician and recommended these as an effective barrier against air-bourne germs. They must work. He never got sick. :)
Also, use something like Purell antiseptic hand sanitizer. Won't dry your hands out as much, and equally effective.
Drink plenty of fluids, too, and stay physically active.

Not anything you can do in a day, but eating right does a world of good. I am almost never sick since I started eating my vegetables and less bread. Not saying bread is bad - but it was for me.
I am so healthy now it is digusting, I mean, how do you call in sick if you are always healthy? (and since I am the president - well, I can't lie to me now can I?)

Orange Juice. I am an OJ addict, and the only times that I have caught something have been when I have stopped drinking it for at least a week or so.

Eat stuff with a lot of garlic in it...raw garlic is better. Kombucha helps to boost your immune system. ;) Take a lot of Zinc or Echinacea. Some foods such as dairy are more mucus forming than others. I would try to eat as healthy as possible.

There was a freeze in Florida a week or so ago. Lost much of this year's crop.

Actually it was in California the freeze ruined the crop.
It was said Florida would have to "pick up the slack".

Not that it saved me from the Evil Strep, but I had gone for 14 months without a contagious illness. Things I did/didn't do when I knew stuff was circulating:
drink kombucha
not skip my multivitamin
an emergen-c every morning
avoided alcohol, refined sugar, & too much Elmer's Glue Food (simple carbs)
didn't skimp on the sleep
rode the bike as much as I could
worshipped the cat (she's got her claws to my throat as I type)
washed my hands a lot, used hand sanitizer, & be very careful about not touching mucous membranes until I could wash
disinfected the front desk & my desk at work at least daily
Well I've been getting pretty good sleep, eating a crazy amount of vit c tabs, and staying away from the sick dude+ washing my hands constantly. Wish me luck. :)
Maybe I'll go take a multi vitamin, I've been slacking on taking them lately.

If you're sick the ride is off. I ain't looking at another one of your yellow loogies again. Let alone you going ahead of me and hocking them, leaving me to dodge them splat rockets. I can't believe you told me you went AHEAD of me to do it. Luckily I was only hit by the spray. Geeez Jon. I swear, what I go through with you. You are lucky I like you.

What if I told you while I started reading this I was going HHHOOOOOCckckkkkkk. PHtoey.
PSssht. That wasn't a yellow loogy. I was being gentlemen like by going 20 feet ahead of you. I already explained to you, I have a year round allergy infection. I'm allllways going to be spitting loogies.
As for the ride. If I end up sick wednesday morning, it's off anyways. But right now I'm breathing perfectly clear, so it's all good. You are so coming. You know why too. ;)

No high fructose corn syrup. The immune system boosters people keep mentioning would also be good. Thing is, short of wearing a respirator with organic filters, you could still get sick.
If you do, run as much as you can handle as fast as you can handle at the very first signs. That wil spike your t cell count and kill the cold.

Go to JC penney. And listen to Mich. If you don't he will go all healthy on you and drive you nuts. Just do what I do, say "uh huh" and he MIGHT leave you alone.
I don't know why I said that. He gets on me still. But knows to not say anything when it comes to ice cream. He knows THEN that I am serious and at that point you don't mess wit da Wongs. Uh huh. Don't mess wit da Wongs. ;)

That's what I'll do. I've heard this suggestion before. As soon as I start feeling stuffy I'll go outside for a jog. Right now I'm feeling ok though.

... and don't touch your face, eyes, nose, etc. whatever's on your hands will get inside you that way.
Update: I went out and sprinted straight for almost 20 minutes. Somehow I pulled a muscle right above my right ass cheek. That's the last time I listen to michiger's advice.

There's as much chance for me to listen to avenged sevenfold as their is for me becoming a spandex wearing roadie.
I bought a pack of disinfectant wipes when people in my house started getting sick. Not only do I wash my hands and all that stuff, but if they touch the faucet, counter, door knob, etc. I pulled out the wipes and cleaned it. So far, I've only gotten sick for half a day.

Use the sick persons tooth brush and lick every door knob in the place. It will boost your immune system. You'll never get sick again!
