Utility Cycling - Photo of xtracycle on bus-type rack

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It was asked in this (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=262552) thread I posted about my xtracycle history if the xtracycle would go on a bus bike rack. I figured people here might want to see the answer to that as well.

This is not a bus of course, but same type of rack. I think the bus racks that are similar to this would work even be better than mine. I do plan on taking some photos on a real bus soon and will post those as well.

This took about 30 seconds to take the wheel off, put it in the rear bag, run the 3 clips through the spokes of the loose wheel so it doesn't go anywhere and ratchet it down. I shook it around and it is completely secure. For those who maybe a little more paranoid than me with their bikes(probably not possible) you could throw a couple of bungees around it and it aint moving. One thing I would suggest doing, is putting some kind of protection on the bottom bracket if you plan on doing this a lot.(piece of tire/tube ziptied down would work great)

ANyways, on to the pics.

Yea pics on the bus.

I tried to put my 27inch wheels on the bus and that Bar you attach to the frame is to strechted and doesn't hold the bike down well. Also it doesn't fit in the slot very good to long. The bar uses a spring.

As far as taking the wheel off You might want to put a bolt on the fork (where the wheel is) so it can rest it on the bar. Again I think the bike would be to Long. There is no clip on the back tire only a long slot to put your bike in www.valleymetro.org (http://www.valleymetro.org)

So yea pic would love to see that on a bus.

Sorry, mate but your pic's show that putting any xtracyle on any
vehicle rack is going to be a very bad idea. The racks simply are
made all wrong for a bike that long. If the bike don't break free
& fall it will be major dings to the frame and paint.

To me this is a.......NOT!!

I like the bike the lady w/blue shorts is riding. It seems to
be pretty beefy to me and is set up really nice. ;) ;) ;)

I'm impressed that he even took time to make the licence plate washout pretty clean. I would have just shopped in something to cover it with no regard for asthetics. Very nice.

I wonder if the bus driver would let you do that. I hope somebody with a Xtra does the crucial experiment.

if your state uses this rack?

Then most likely you can find specs here.
http://www.bicycleracks.com/busrack_products_datasheets.asp
66 inches is what you need.
However The bus driver needs to not read.
That for safety it is designed only to make contact with the tires. Not any part of the frame.
