Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Mavic lockring problems

so I have some Mavic ellipse wheels as most of you know.
and I am having problems getting the lock ring to butt up against the cog.
I now have an EAI cog and the same problem as the cheapy.
anyone else have this problem?
any solutions to this problem?

yea its weird .
ran a spacer and it was too much stripped the threads off the hub on one side I guess this would be a ok time to try to throw a thick ol' soma lock ring on since the threads are kinda jacked already.


any thoughts on slamming them on with red loc-tite.(isn't that the grarly one?)


alot of money for jacked rear hub ,oh well lesson learned.

what lockring were you trying this with? a mavic? i doubt the soma will work... i think they're only made in 1.29 x 24 tpi, which is the threading for most hubs, like d-a, suzue, suntour, formula, surly, grandma, etc. the mavics are 33.0 x 1. campy, phil, miche are 33.5 x 24 tpi, which is super close to a mavic and will thread on. i know because when i first got my wheelset i tried a campy and it seemed to fit, so i figured that was the right one until i looked at the lockrings at businesscycle.com. oops.

loctite is your call. i'm an elitist prick and say you shouldn't... unless you run the bad side without a lockring for track racing purposes only. it may not be that big of a deal with a front brake though.

there is some threads left on the bad side, and i did use a mavic lockring, i just thought that since they are kinda jacked and the soma is thicker why not try it with loctite?

do you think that putting a soma lock ring will weaken them so that it might shear off the rest off the threads?

I guess Ill try the home made coke can spacer this time.

does any one know if they make a 1/2 mm spacer .... I guess that would be a 0.50 mm spacer

I had Ellipses with the same problem. It made a horrible noise when I tried to lock up the back wheel. I ran a small spacer and never had the problem again.

Just for future reference, blue is the gnarly loctite, red you can remove with some heat and some elbow grease.

can you get the blue off or is it gonna mess up my threads like JB weld?

blue is medium strength, comes off with tools
red is high strength, comes off with heat + toolz

before you do anything though.. maybe your hub is still under some kind of warranty ?

Not quite what sure but I think you are saying that blue is stronger than red, which, is not correct. red is very difficult to undo. Blue is undoable with hand tools without heat and is what you should be using for most bike stuff.

a bit,and bad design, but thing just keep getting worse. they were great for about 12 miles.well back to the bike shop.
and as for that stupid plastic tool f**ck that thing too.

user error ,maybe ,but that stuff didn't happen with Dura ace ,suzue ,camy ,or even Formula hubs so
I'm just frusturated and don't know why they they fell the need to be so damn different and specialized when everything else works prefectly well.

Did you buy the wheels from this shop? Even if they didn't, they should stand behind their work and should do something for you, as it was their guy who messed up.

It's also possible that you could get the hub shell rethreaded at a machine shop. It's worth a shot.

I wasn't aware of the mavic proprietary lockrings...my rush hour pro came stock w/ ellipse wheels, unmarked 16t cog, unmarked lockring w/ washer. I assume the lockring is mavic, the cog is raleigh?
Whatever, they fit and work. That said, I bought an eai 17t cog and surley (I think) lockring and put those on the other side of the hub (no washer), and they worked fine...the lockring is quite thick and I guess the threading is close to mavic's. So I may run into problems down the road when I remove the 17t side but for now I'm good. My LBS owner (32 yrs.) was unaware of the unique ellipse lockrings but quite familiar w/ varying euro "standards".
