Name of Ride: Spooktacular Nightmare 90 (I think that's what they call it)
Location: Bakersfield
When: October
Type: metric
Number of Riders: I just don't know...100 maybe?
Organizer: will post back on the organizers
Rating: 5
Comments on SAG support and Rest Stops: Great rest stops, great volunteers, homemade cookies and halloween treats and lots of junk food too (Cali - you'd love this ride's food!)
Comments on the route: Hard as hell and I just rode the 90. Hilly, cold, windy but gorgeous farmland. I'm easily pleased, I realize, but this really was a great ride. I rode it with friends that I adore, so that made it even all the better!
I asked Cali to post this ride - it's not the most popular but if you want a challenge, this is your ride especially the "Hideous 100" - I think the elevation is 11,000'! The "Horrible" is only 9K and then there's the 90 and metric rides - so something for everyone. I've done the Horrible, 90 and metric. Enjoyed each ride. They all have their own route. but 300 or so people do all the rides but maybe just 150 or so do the 90 and 100s.
The Kern Wheelmen really try to make this a good ride. It's just very remote. Generally it's cold - cool (it snowed on us one year) but can be hot.
I give it a 4- a decent ride worth the try at least one time. Sags are good and they feed you before during and after the ride!
Scenary is awesome btw. If you do the Hideous you climb a mountain and go through a real terrain change, grasslands to forest, on a road that is seldom used so little car traffic. Some of the banked switchback turns are at 15%!!! I would do this ride over the OCW Bear.
Brandy - this would be a fitting challenge for you!!!!
ME - the Nightmare 90 is a nighty miler (in just less than a 100)- there is a metric ride I forgot what they called it.

Name of Ride: SPOOKTACULAR = HORRIBLE HUNDRED
Location: BAKERSFIELD, CA
When: OCTOBER
Type: CENTURY Number of Riders: NOT REALLY SURE...WE STARTED LATE AROUND 9 BECAUSE IT WAS SO COLD.
Organizer:KERN WHEELMAN Rating: 4
Comments on SAG support and Rest Stops: EXCELLENT VOLUNTEERS. I SAW SAG ONLY TWICE WHICH IS PROBABLY BECAUSE WE STARTED SO LATE.
Comments on the route: THERE WAS ALOT OF CLIMBING.....WHICH MADE FOR GOOD DOWNHILLS. THE SCENERY WAS GREAT. COWS AND I MEAN LOTS OF COWS ON THE COURSE. THE REST STOPS WERE STOCKED WITH GREAT TREATS AND ONCE AGAIN THERE WAS CAKE. A HUGE WEDDING CAKE AT THE LUNCH STOP BECAUSE SOMEONE GOT MARRIED UP ON THE HIDEOUS MOUNTAIN.
I PLAN ON DOING AGAIN NEXT YEAR AND THIS TIME I'M STARTING ON TIME.
THE KERN WHEELMAN ARE INFAMOUS FOR THEIR AFTER RIDE BBQ'S. THEIR MOTTO IS " THEY RIDE TO EAT" AND THEY AIN'T PLAYING.
