Did my first ride on the trainer tonight. It sucks! I went 30 minutes of intervals in the garage and wonder, How does a person stay motivated to do that all winter? I rode outdoors all last winter and I think I'll head back out again. I didn't go as far or as fast as in summer, but I did keep my base so I was ready when spring came. Let me know how you all do it. Thanks, Dann

Lots of us ride to and from work year around. Trainers are so boring. ;)

Trainers are in fact a little slice of hell in an otherwise beautiful sport. Ride however you can. Trainer or outside. Can't go wrong.

I've used movies, even cycling related movies like Breaking Away and American Flyers. I especially enjoy time on the trainer by watching 'From the Cockpit', a video compilation of laps around road courses worldwide as seen from cockpit-mounted cameras on F1 cars from the 50's to the modern day. 'Racing' around Spa, the Karousel at the Nurburgring and other great tracks is inspiring. I just have to make sure I don't get carried away and tip the trainer over by leaning into the corners.

have fun,

Gotta try those movies some day.
Riding the trainer is about as interesting as watching paint dry, but at least it keeps my bike out of the salt.

I either listen to really angry music or just think to myself how much I hated getting dropped at superweek last summer and between those two, I've never really had a problem doing 2+ hour rides on trainers.

and if that doesn't work, just think of all the food you can eat afterwards :)

Try Rollers, they will at least keep you on your toes for a little while longer.

I listen to music via headphones, watch the 6:00pm news, watch old videos of races, and watch the Weather Channel hoping for a break soon in the Winter doldrums.

Motivation comes from the heart. You've got to be thinking "Man, this is SO BORING, no body else want's to do this, but I WILL!". :roflmao:

Me? I'd rather be skiing, and it's been great!

I second the movies. Got my bike on the trainer in a corner of my home theater. Watching action movies keeps my cadence up. :)

only time i was on a trainer was, oddly, july '05 -- my right arm was in a cast up to the armpit, and i was determined not to lose the good form i had that year. well, it was so hellishly bad, i only did it three times, and suffered the 2 1/2 weeks w/o riding; when they changed out the full-arm cast for a half-cast (below the elbow), i 'modified' the palm portion of the cast to be able to reach the brake. back on the bike, and i rode every day during aug., and lost the cast in the middle.

i'd have to custom-build a set of rollers for my bike, as i don't have a roadie, and could only put slicks on my xlt; rollers wouldn't have the wheelbase capacity for it. i'll quit riding before i use another trainer, so i'll do my miles outside, as close to year-round as i can. i just consider the downtime 'recovery'.
