Texas - Austin Livestong Challenge (Any DFW folks....)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Any DFW folks planning on doing this? I just got an email from them today.

Dear Carvey,

Can you keep a secret? We hope not! Because of your past commitment to helping people affected by cancer, the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) wanted you to be among the first to know the details of the 2007 LIVESTRONG Challenge and we're counting on you to help spread the word. We'll kick off this year's Challenge in Philadelphia, Pa., Aug. 25-26 before heading to Portland, Ore., on Sept. 29-30. The events culminate with a joint Challenge and Ride for the Roses celebration in Austin, Texas, Oct. 12-14.

Though we won't officially kick off the 2007 LIVESTRONG Challenge until March, you can register now and get a head start on your fundraising efforts.

Speaking of fundraising, you set the bar very high last year, bringing in a combined total of $10 million to support the more than 10 million American cancer survivors. Today we challenge you to do even more! And because we believe in action, we've accepted the challenge, too. Based in part on your feedback, we've made some pretty big changes to improve your experience.

First, by reducing the number of locations this year, our limited staff can focus resources on providing you with an event that leaves you transformed - energized, inspired and empowered to make a difference. We purposely chose geographic locations that are easily accessible from across the country.
Second, we've streamlined the event activities. You'll still have the multi-distance ride options, but now runners and walkers will team up for a community 5K so athletes of all skill levels - and even those undergoing treatment - may participate.
As before, all Challenge participants pay a one-time $50 event registration fee. This year we've reduced the minimum fundraising level for cyclists to just $250 and eliminated it altogether for walkers and runners. Of course we encourage everyone to set high fundraising goals that are equally challenging and rewarding.
And, we've saved the best news for last: Lance is coming! He was so inspired by your hard work and commitment in 2006 that he doesn't want to miss out. He's making plans to participate in each Challenge city.
We're excited to get things started for the 2007 LIVESTRONG Challenge and look forward to having you on our team. We hope you are, too. Go ahead and register now. Interested in volunteering? Volunteer opportunities will be available three or four months prior to the event. Stay tuned for more details.

See you at the finish line.
LIVESTRONG!

About 75 of us are doing a century in June at Lake Tahoe to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (they also deal with Myloma). We went last year and had a ball! That ride is absolutely incredible. It's called "America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride," and believe me, the name fits.

Come join us! Call this number for more info:

I'm not from the DFW area, but I've got more connections to cancer than I care for and I wanted to throw my support for both the livestrong organization and team in training. I did the ride for the roses back in 2003 and I'm currently signed up for the 2007 livestrong portland ride. They put on a great ride.

I'm also doing Team in Training for the March 2007 Solvang, CA ride. It's a great setup also, especially for those who would like to ride and train with a group to build you up to a century ride.

Hopefully you won't see me there. I drive the sweep van. I rode it once, but I prefer volunteering. I believe you will find it one of the best run rides around. Make sure you go to the Expo to pick up your registration materials. There is a bunch of free stuff to be had and some real good deals on merchandise from places like Bike Mart and Bicycle Sport Shop.

I'm glad to see they've dropped the fundraising. I was pretty upset that last year
the minimum was $500 and the Ride for the Roses was astronomical at $5k (I think),
I always thought the Ride for the Roses should have been the open ride, not just the
invitational one.
I've done 2 (or 3, forget) Ride for the Roses. I think I'll look into doing this one again.

Not sure if everyone saw this on The Paceline:

Austin:
The 2007 LIVESTRONG Challenge Austin will see the ride move out west to start and finish in Dripping Springs, Lance Armstrong’s training grounds. Dripping Springs is a quiet, picturesque community 20 miles from the Austin city limits and is commonly referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Hill Country’. Dripping Springs terrain lends itself to any cyclist who wants to enjoy a quiet, challenging ride that encompasses everything the Hill Country is known for: Texas Ranches, rolling hills, riverfront views, whitetail deer and quintessential Texas Longhorns.
The course departs out of Dripping Springs High School, and the beauty of the ride is immediately evident. The 70 and 100-mile courses head southeast towards the quaint town of Wimberley nestled along the Blanco River where the shaded roads and riverfront view is the ideal place for riding. 100-mile riders then head due west towards the town of Fisher and northwest traversing the town of Blanco. The course then turns back towards Dripping Springs for the Post Event Party. Overall, all the course distances for the Austin Challenge encompass moderate to difficult terrain with some steep climbs. The long course will ascend a total of 6,000 ft. before finishing back in Dripping Springs.

Sweet. That's about half the distance from my house compared to the Expo Center.

Any suggestions on where to stay? I was thinking about maybe in Wimberley?

Wimberley's a good place to start. There's a lot of bed & breakfast type places. If you stayed at the Mt. Gainor Inn (http://www.mtgainorinn.com/), you could probably ride to the start line. They host a lot of Austin Cycling Association rides and are very bike friendly.

I've also ridden past A Room With A View (http://www.hillcountryaroomwithaview.com/) on the way out to Johnson City and it definitely lives up to its name.
