That looks like it would be fun; especially out in Campo. Next stop, riding the trestles in Carrizo Gorge!

That's what you call a trainer.
RR are not too kindly disposed toward private use of their rail lines. Good idea to see what you can find out about the schedule on the track and not be on a high speed section when the train comes through. Not the ride to use your ipod on either.

With my crummy hearing I'd have to feel it coming through the vibrations in the track!!!

Make sure you have a good mirror. Like as not, you won't get a horn warning. Worse, on a down grade with the throttle back, those deisel electrics can be pretty quiet. . .all you'll hear/feel is a low-frequency rumble. . .then. . . Anyway, thank the Saints for cat-like reflexes in one's youth.

Now how does a Coyote get cat-like reflexes. That's dog-gone puzzling!

Is that a carbon frame, DG?
You can get out and safely ride abandoned railroad tracks. I have 12 miles available that I ride with an old step through frame bike with a three-speed hub and coaster brake. The railroad company does not care if walkers or rail bikers use it but they told me they would put me in jail if they caught me with my Fairmont M-19 railcar or also known as a speeder on it. I only use the Fairmont on NARCOA sponsored excursions. http://www.narcoa.org/
It carves turns like its on....
Nevermind.

I think we shoud enter into a discussion about the veracity of wearing helmets while riding the rails...

I spent some time as a "gandy dancer" in my youth. We witnessed and had some close calls. If you waited till you heard something before reacting, you'd be rail kill. This would actually be very dangerous especially on curves. We had an incident where the foreman was not checking, we had 4 consecutive ties pulled out on a live rail, and a train came around the curve. You never saw such scrambling. We tossed in two ties and put in two spikes each with no plates or anchors in about 6 seconds, and took off running across the field. Amazingly, she held (everything was "she" on the railroad).
I wonder where Gary can ride that thing, since the coastal San Diego Northern Railroad line now has almost 50 trains per weekday. Yes, they are VERY strict about anyone even crossing the tracks, let alone cruising along them. Our rule in Leucadia is stop, watch and listen for trains, watch for cops, then cross.

If you really want to scare some folks, add a horn that sounds like a train horn....

Holy Heart Attack, Batman. That will clear the railroad crossings, except for all those bodies collapsing across the tracks.
